Gabriel
Never will my knee touch the ground before you, never will my head bow to yours. Try all you might, you will never take my soul. He seemed oddly at peace with himself, the wolf who laid in the cooling meadow of his mistress’s land. His eyes were closed, his ears resting, his body unmoving. He was taking a sense of everything, getting a feel of the world around him. The corners of his muzzle lifted in a soft smile. Slowly opening his eyes, the sun up high shined down on his dark coat only to bring it alive, the brown long the top of his head and ridge of his back shining against the rays. His amber eyes brought out the contrast of the grey beneath his lids. His coat was well groomed and with the dew on the grass that dripped on his own coat, it shimmered in the sunlight. He took in a deep breath, his chest expanding and his head moving back, lifting up as he took all he could in his senses. The fresh crisp air of spring, the slight smell of the other wolves of the area tinged on his tastebuds. He could smell the distant flowers in the fields. Ahh the joy of spring, it was so beautiful here. Lowering his head again, he stared at the world around him. It was so much more beautiful that what he had been used to. Even here, actively knowing he was owned, he still had that low sense of freedom that he had recently remembered prior when he came here. However, his active thoughts went into a different direction. He could remember his mother’s voice, cooing at him, speaking to him how spring looked outside the rock.
’The flowers are all different colors, and the dew on the grass makes it shimmer in the rising of the sun’ There was no doubt she was right. He had snuck out before sunrise to watch the sun move across the horizon and to the sky above. The colors that manifested themselves in the sky were so much more enjoyable out in the open in the clean grass than in the murky muddy areas of the rock he grew up in. He would never get old of it. He doubt he could. He gave a soft chuckle but the smile along his lips slowly disappeared as it moved into a rather depressed looking frown. He wished she was with him, laying beside him and taking in the sun with him.
“Oh mother, if you could only see this beauty…” He murmured to himself, lowering his head more as he rested it on his paws. He listened to the chirps of the birds that flew overhead and closed his eyes. It was like music to his ears as he rested there, listening to the grass move with the cooling wind that blew against them; the leaves that rustled in the distance. All music to his ears.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

KASIMIRA Swift. That's what she needed to be now. The sooner she reached Irrsin, the sooner she could asses the damage, see her pups, her beloved... Tortuga. For a moment, the queen's heart caught in her throat. Would he still be there waiting for her? What of the pack? The last time she'd seen them all had been weeks ago, caught between flames of burning fire an inopportune, yet heated, pack argument. And because of her lack in leadership, Irrsin had fallen.
Kasimira threw herself into the forest, the sooty black paws thrumming against the ground as she willed her legs on. She couldn't think of that now. There was one task. Get home. Exhaustion clutched at her stamina greedily, and she vainly shook it off time and time again as she ran. The pulse that had guided her for so long, was finally beginning to fail. The weeks after being seperated from the Irrsin pack had been long and solitary; only once or twice had she even encountered another wolf in the now leveled forests. Kasimira's mind yearned for her pack, her howls always searching the night skies desperately. She waited for a response, an answer or voice she recgonized, but there had never been one. What else could she do but travel? The fire had burnt down the whole forest to stumps or less, and there had been nothing to guide her home. Nothing but wind and rain and the lost scents of her home.
Overtime, Kasimira had made her way, in some fashion, to the falls. The natural roar and pounding resonance of the water was rooted deep within the female, recalling her back to the nights with Tortuga that she'd spent there. Once she had rested at the banks a few hours, she had been quick to find her way to Irrsin the best she knew. As she climbed to the nearest moorside, she prepared herself for the worst. After all the destruction, Kasimira knew she'd be lucky to even find the pack in the original lands. All of the prey and avalible food sources that Irrsin relied on over the years would have fled, leaving nothing but singed roots for a whole pack of hungry wolves. There were three options to their whereabouts. Either the pack had somehow survived and stayed in the meadow home or located under Tortuga's guidance to a different land. And, of course, there was a last option that, for the time being, she couldn't bring herself to consider.
After a deep breath to steady herself, the queen stepped forward and overlooked the land. The blue eyes wandered over the burnt countryside, pain flashing as she studied the general form and the cinder coated roll of the meadow. There was nothing. Nothing but dark waves of dead grass and still darker traces of treelines.
And then, a movement.
A few tail lengths out, there was motion. Something or someone was out there. Kasimira stiffened as she watched, her heart thumping wildily. Had someone else attempted a claim on her home in her temporary absence? Anger flared suddenly in her chest before she quieted the feeling. She needed to analyze this carefully in case the intruder didn't care to be on speaking terms with the returned Alpha. A few seconds passed, and then a few more before she dared breathe again. It was definitely a wolf. And a male, by the faint scent that drifted towards her. It almost seemed like someone she knew...
Kasimira flung herself down into the meadow, pulling herself into a quick trot to where the male laid. She might as well figure out who her guest was. By the look of his stature, however, he seemed quite relaxed, almost as if he knew better than to expect danger here. And then it hit her. Kasimira squinted her blue eyes and barked suddenly when she realized who it was. Gabriel. No surprise there. The previous Auktion Rock male had had the utmost respect for the Irrsin alpha when she had first met and bought him, and Kasimira had known when she'd brought the dark male home that he would make a loyal member. More so than she'd originally thought, apparently.
How had he survived the fire? Kasimira raced over to his size, her eyes searching him carefully before speaking.
"Fancy seeing you here."
It seemed like a lame line at best, but the queen hadn't the energy to be politically or emotionally correct at the moment. She wanted more than anything to curl up with Tortuga and her pack, to feel the thump of their heartbeats and their deep breathing next to her. In her haste, Kasimira leaned over to nudge Gabriel affectionatly. How she'd missed another's company! It wasn't her nature by any means, to act so motherly and this open, and she was startled with her own behavior as she pulled away. Watch it, Kasi. Can't get too sappy. Tortuga will be fine, he's strong...
She forced herself to look Gabriel in the eyes as she began her next sentance. However much it would pain her to hear something horrible, she had to make sure her pack was okay.
"Where is everyone else?"
Her voice held strong, but Kasimira knew it was only a matter of time before she lost her sanity. What if Gabriel was the only one to make it out...? Please, Eperna, let them be alive..

GABRIEL
Even the worst of fires, new life always begins.
The wind continue to lick and kiss at his furred cheeks as Gabriel rested in the mist of the burnt land. But he knew life would ocne again make it’s claim on the land. He knew it from the stories his mother would whisper to him after his sibilings left, after he was left alone with her. Even in the darkest of moments, the sun on his face he could still feel her breathing chest against his face as he would cuddle near her for hehr warmth and comfort. His eyes would open gently, looking lazily before himself as another bird chirped in the distance, the rustling of the grass when the wind would blow. A deep breath and he could once again taste the new life that bred in the ground beneath him. The trees in which their burnt bark on the outer coat seemed to be nothing but death. The seeds on the ground and beneath the soil would grow and create new life for the forest. Like a neww world beign born from the ashes of the old, he wondered something. Something he hadn’t wondered in a long time. Had he become free? He gave a snort. He didn’t know if he liked that. When the fire began to spread and take the forest, Gabriel had thought death would for sure become him. But in his determination, he didn’t leave, until all the others did. And so, he stayed and survied. However, Gabriel had lost their scent. Lost it when the rain began and the fires died. Lost everything once more like he had before as he reigned alone in the lands of Irrsin. In hopes…in hopes they would return. Festering in his thoughts, it wasn’t shortly after that he heard unusual rustling coming from his left. He turned his head when the voice of familiarity entered his ears. Was it truly her?
Gabriel’s deep amber eyes stared at his once alphess. Gabriel hadn’t stood so fast in his life as the blood rushed from his body and into his head and he stumbled back some, his sight leaving for some seconds. ”Whoa, stood up too fast.” He murmured, a small shake of the head before he once again gathered his footing and stared at her. She wasn’t a figment, she was there as he was. He moved oddly closer, his muzzle slightly opened to take in her scent. He didn’t haave a chance to speak again when her question tuned in her ears. He could hear the stern and strength in her voice but he knew, by her face, that she was hurting. He suddenly found himself hanging his head. “I’m unsure m’lady. I hadn’t left the lands during the blaze until I knew for sure everyone had left, but the flames were engulfing everything and I couldn’t see. I had taken in too much of the smoke I didn’t wake up until the rain had washed everything away.” Gabriel didn’t bother mentioning that he was in a small creek at the time to keep the fire away from him. The only major damage to him was his ability to breath right. The smoke had ruined his lungs almost and he was still healing from it. He often took large breaths to get more oxygen into his lungs. His eyes went back up to look at hers.
”I admit I haven’t been searching but, just through normal rounds you are the first I’ve encountered. I didn’t leave.” He lifted his head, almost holding a sense of pride as he stared at his mistress. ”I couldn’t. ‘Even fire brings new life’…My mother taught me that, I refused to let even another wolf think he or she could take this land that is not theirs. You brought me here, I intended to stay, regardless on what happened. Even if it killed me.” Gabriel’s voice never sounded as proud as it did the very moment the words came out. Never had he stood so proudly before her, his eyes focused on her. She took him from the dump, away from the miserable life he had and gave him a new one. He would serve her till death took him. That was his vow he made.

KASIMIRA ”Whoa, stood up too fast.”
As Gabriel jumped to attention at her side, Kasimira moved quickly to steady the male. It was obvious the fire's flames, smoke, and unexpected arrival had taken a toll on the male. She had to take charge now. She was home, back to her life as an Alpha. Besides, he was the only way to find the rest of her pack, the rest of herself. The queen tried, rather unsuccessfully, to crack a lighthearted smile for him.
"Watch it now, we can't have you fainting on me."
She murmured a soft warning before waiting for the sklavin to explain what had happened. Her ears were pricked, her every ounce waiting on the words she wanted to hear. Please, tell me they made it to safety... Kasimira felt her stomach turn as Gabriel opened his mouth, dropping his head in a sense of shame.
“I’m unsure m’lady. I hadn’t left the lands during the blaze until I knew for sure everyone had left, but the flames were engulfing everything and I couldn’t see. I had taken in too much of the smoke I didn’t wake up until the rain had washed everything away.”
Quickly enough, the dread that lingered in her chest began to unravel. Well, if one thing was for certain, the pack had at least made it out of the Irrsin border. Gabriel said he had been the last to leave and Kasimira trusted him full force on that fact. His next words were uttered with a different emotion. She quirked a brow as she watched his expression. Was that pride showing through the sklavin?
”I admit I haven’t been searching but, just through normal rounds, you are the first I’ve encountered. I didn’t leave.”
The dark amber of his eyes met Kasimira's blue and her breath caught. Who was she talking to? It reminded her vaguely of Kyren, with his bold attitude and always respectful tone. Whatever had happened over the past few weeks had changed Gabriel. This wasn't the same sklavin she'd brought home from the Auktion Rock. Even his stance was different; he still showed complete adoration for her, but it seemed to be placed on a stronger, more steady frame. His shoulders were broader in some sense, and for a moment, Kasimira felt a faint tickling of affection for the loyal male.
"I couldn’t. ‘Even fire brings new life’…My mother taught me that, I refused to let even another wolf think he or she could take this land that is not theirs. You brought me here, I intended to stay, regardless on what happened. Even if it killed me.”
He was faithful and steadfast in his ties to her, that much was blatently clear. A rush of sympathy fell over the queen as she listened, her eyes flickering between his as if to offer some sense of reassurance that she was indeed here. How long would he have waited for them? How many days and nights would he have remained here as a loner, waiting for the pack's unlikely return? Kasimira wasn't sure herself. How long would she have waited in she'd been in his position?
Forever. The response was instantaneous. It hardly needed an answer, for the emotions came bubbling up inside her, replying with vigor and love for her pack. That had been the driving force in her searches over the past few weeks. She simply had to find her family, if only to have a sense of closure with their departure. It wasn't a question. Without them, she was alone. If time had alloted her, would she have joined another pack for company's sake? Kasimira turned the question over in her mind a few times. She wasn't sure she could answer that definitely. She relished pack life. It was the center for seasons and relationships, friendships and trials. If she lived as a loner, what was there to look forward to?
On the other hand, however, would she have been able to adapt to a different pack? How would she have handled not being the Alpha? That last thought made a grimmace rise to her lips. That wasn't an option. She was an alpha. That was something no one could ever take from her. She was born to lead. Anyone who thought different, well, they wouldn't last long.
Kasimira turned her thoughts back to the matter at hand. She had to stop asking the "what ifs" for now, at least until she found Tortuga and the others. Those questions wouldn't help her find her friends, and they certianly wouldn't help her already fragmenting concious. Kasimira graciously leaned forward and licked the side of Gabriel's cheek. His loyalty would always be with her now. It was something she wouldn't--couldn't--forget.
"We'll rest here for the night and set out around dawn to begin looking for any sign of the others. Any chance you have a lead on where they might have gone?"
Turning her head to the skies, Kasimira let her eyes graze the clouds as if she could find her family hiding behind the white. They were out there, somewhere. She had to believe that. She had to.
Blinking back at Gabriel, Kasimira looked over the male with a second glance. He looked awfully skinny. There couldn't be much to eat around here... If she wanted to set out on a search mission later, the two of them would need to be full of energy. She could hunt for the two of them; it would get her mind off the current loss of her pack and maybe provide her with some insight with where to start looking as she roamed for any possible prey.
"You hungry?"

GABRIEL
His eyes almost sparkled when her rough tongue touched the fur on his cheek. It had been long for anyone to touch him so affectionately. His heart even fluttered against his chest. He didn’t stay for affection, he stayed for her honor, his own, his own pride of what he was. He may had been taken and his title was slave, but it didn’t change who he was as a wolf. Her features as he spoke, he noticed them change, her eyes as they softened, her ears flickering. The touch she had given him, the tone of her voice when she spoke again for resting. He felt like he had truly died almost. A smile crept on his muzzle and even after she spoke and her gaze went above, he wanted to nuzzle against her chest, her soft fur. His strong mistress who to him had come in spite of it all and showed affection as well as worry and commitment to come back to her lands. The wolf was at a lost for words. They caught up in his throat like he hadn’t swallowed his last meal properly, not like he had one in a few days. He was weak, and that was a known fact.
His figure was worst than his time at his home of Auktion Rock, but it wasn’t necessarily his fault. With the fire that rushed the lands so suddenly, the wildelife has run to safety, while the lone sklavin stayed put. He opened his maw finally, to allow the breeze of new and growing life swarm on his taste buds. He couldn’t help himself after a few moments when she questioned his hunger. Of course he was, but he wouldn’t put it so bluntly. Being truly alone had changed him some, aand he was happy to be around another. He lost his way almost but once again he felt like he regained his position, though others would run from it, Gabriel welcomed it like a newborn pup to life. His tail began to wag and his whole demeanor seemed to change. He had gone from his serious and prideful self to the laid back and almost comedic attitude.
”Well, I am practically starving but these feisty rabbits and squirrels have learned my tricks and well, tricky fellows as they are, I can be a bit more trickier. I have a few traps set up actually. When you’re here for a bit you learn to think smart instead and working harder. Difficult, but fun almost.”
Gabriel gave a chuckle. He was a thinker, and when he couldn’t catch the buggers, he thought of ways to get them trapped. Messing with branches so much though, his front paws were full of cuts and scrapes, but free of infection at least. He lifted his one paw, a new wound between his digits.
”Though branches are very mean to me.” He murmured almost childlike, giving a lick at the wound and then placing it down. ”As far as seeing anyone or where they have gone, I’m not sure. Everyone pretty much scattered. Most ran north, a few south and I lost track of the others. Since it’s been a while, surely they would be on their way back unless others had taken their claim on the other sklavins.” Gabriel turned to look at her again, his amber eyes full of seriousness. ”That’s another reason I didn’t leave. If the flames would have caught me and killed me, I would have been fine with it. However, to be taken captive by another Alpha, well they would have killed me probably.” Gabriel turned and shook his dark fur. ”I don’t like assholes and other that think just because of my position doesn’t mean I wont fight. Plus, as I’ve said before, My devotion is to you only my lady.” He did a sideward glance again, smirking at her in his charming way. ”The den is still in tack. I’ve cleaned it up some as well. Just an hours walk actually.”
Gabriel couldn’t recall talking this much to anyone. Maybe he was placed in higher spirits with her around. That being the case, the young wolf was much happier being with his mistress. She gave him life, just like the fire had given it back to the forest. He considered himself not only lucky, but blessed.[/blockquote]

KASIMIRA ”Well, I am practically starving but these feisty rabbits and squirrels have learned my tricks and well, tricky fellows as they are, I can be a bit more trickier. I have a few traps set up actually. When you’re here for a bit you learn to think smart instead and working harder. Difficult, but fun almost.”
Kasimira nodded silently, her eyes gazing hungrily around the burnt meadow. At least there weren't a lot of hiding spots for the prey now that the fire had blazed the sweet amber strands away. On the other hand, there wasn't much movement in the blackened grasses either. There wasn't much of anything, actually. Was this what Irrsin had truly become?
”Though branches are very mean to me.”
Kasimira's eyes glanced halfheartedly down at Gabriel's paws, only half expecting to see a few cuts and grazes. Instead, she did a double take as she glimpsed the deep red marks and the stains of dried blood that still remained on her sklavin's paws. It didn't look too serious the more she took the sight in, but it still screamed of hunger and desperation. He needed something to eat, and soon. Besides, he'd be lucky if infection didn't set into those scrapes.
”As far as seeing anyone or where they have gone, I’m not sure. Everyone pretty much scattered. Most ran north, a few south and I lost track of the others. Since it’s been a while, surely they would be on their way back unless others had taken their claim on the other sklavins.”
That was another good point. She hadn't stopped to consider that the pack could have fragmented off. If that was the case, her roaming sklavins would be much harder to find. Another dominor could have claimed them, or a spiteful freior could have taken them back to the Auktion Rock. Calliope, she knew well enough, would not have fought to get away. Most likely she'd been stolen away by another wolf, making her the most difficult to locate. Kyren was no doubt somewhere with Matrid, keeping her safe under his natural, protective nature. Zy. Kasimira rolled her eyes inwardly at the thought of her more flamboyant sklavin. That brute was probably relishing his new found freedom and simply needed to be found by herself in order to be corralled back into the pack. Stellar.
”That’s another reason I didn’t leave. If the flames would have caught me and killed me, I would have been fine with it. However, to be taken captive by another Alpha, well they would have killed me probably.”
...And if other dominors were able to make easy work of Irrsin's sklavins, where did that put the despised, Irrsin royalty? What if they hadn't all escaped together? If Marzell or Adelina had been caught independently, they'd put themselves in great danger just with usual reckless behavior and anti-authority personalities. Being heir, Dresna knew better than the other two; she knew how to take care of herself and how to handle adults in a situation. Kasimira could only pray the pups had at least stayed together, even if they'd somehow been separated from Tortuga.
But were they alive at all? What if they'd been caught off guard by some vengeful freior.. Maybe, Kasimira considered, they were looking for her. Or maybe they'd lost hope in finding her after days of nothing but dry, burnt air. Kasimira forced the thoughts away, unwilling to consider where her mate and family had ended up after the fire had died off. For all she knew they were dead, lost to that haunting blaze of sickly red and crisp orange.. She couldn't think like that anymore! Kasimira growled softly, cutting off Gabriel to intercept his thoughts.
"I'm going hunting. I'll be back in a short while, so don't wander."
It was blunt and abrasive, she knew, but her thoughts were so twisted, she hadn't the energy to fix her outward emotions. Affection from the black she-wolf would only last so long. She needed to get out of the main meadow at least, let her mind clear and the memories and scents of the place fade a little. Kasimira nudged Gabriel a wordless, half-hearted apology before bounding off into the blackened grass, her heart pounding in anxiety over her family.
She burst into the treeline angrily, letting her pace increase as an outpouring of herself. Pulling and reaching fervently over the ground with her claws, Kasimira ignored the howl of the wind in her ears. She had to block out the last words Tortuga had spoken to her. She had to begin to forget. Of course she didn't want to give up, but she had to come to reality sometime. She had to accept that fact that she might never see him again, especially since there had been no sign whatsoever of her mate, no indicators of his position, no scent to follow to his side, no nothing.
The world was a blur, the ashen colors mixing into something incomprehensible. How did she go from her previous glamor and position to this? Kasimira slowed her pace as her breathing became more ragged and sharp, painfully aware of her inability to run well since the fire's smoke had entered her lungs all those weeks ago. At first breathing had been a task, hard to do and harder still to pursue. Overtime, it had become easier, praise Eperna. But she wasn't her old self yet. Not yet by any means.
Snap. Kasimira's black ears flicked in suspense as a twig cracked behind her. Prey? Or an intruder? Slowly, steadily, she turned on her paw pads, stepping lightly as to not make the same mistake. Her blue eyes narrowed in on the rabbit a few tail lengths away, noting in frustration how scrawny the animal was. Pathetic, really. Irrsin had been envied for the abundance of prey, of deer in particular, and now she was reduced to hunting meager vermin. Disgusting.
One. Kasimira slowly inched forward, her eyes never leaving the brown fur as she moved. Two. The queen tried to imagine what Zy would say if he caught her hunting something as poor as this rabbit. He'd probably laugh and make some provocative remark about her status as the queen. Three. With a deep breath and a shove, the black frame shot forward, claws outstretched and a snarl on her face. Gabriel was starving. She was starving.
As soon as she felt the rabbit's tiny frame pinned under her paws, Kasimira leaned over to finish off her prey. It squirmed and squealed under her paws, but the she-wolf refused to feel any sense of pity, and certainly not with Gabriel's survival depending on this meal. The blood was warm and fresh in her mouth, and it took all the female had to drop her bite and not consume the tiny animal herself. Kasimira quickly picked the rabbit up between her jaws and trotted swiftly back to where Gabriel would be waiting.
Cresting the ridge where she'd left her sklavin, Kasimira carefully made her way down to Gabriel's side. She dropped the rabbit at the male's paws, ignoring the grumble that arose from her own stomach with a hint of annoyance.
"It's all yours. Once you're done, we'll go find the dens."
Kasimira, back to her usual position of Alpha, turned and sat away from Gabriel, knowing too well that watching the male eat would only increase her hunger. It wasn't like her to allow the sklavins to eat before herself, but Gabriel's loyalty was owed that much. Heck, if she tried to eat, Kasimira wasn't sure she could stomach the meal anyways. Anxiety was building in her, a knot inside.
Where are you, Tortuga?

GABRIEL Gabriel opened his muzzle again to speak but stopped, his ears perked when she spoke so suddenly, not actually noticing how she glanced at his paws since he too was pretty impervious on what was happening. 'So don't wander' The single phrase caused him to flop on his haunches at the command. He didn't plan on it now. He mentally kicked himself. He possibly could have become free yet here he was happily accepting his title back. It was something about Kasmira that kept him here, that and the possible hope to be around for another round of puppies. He watched her stalk off, his amber eyes watching until she left his line of sight. It was the calling birds in the distance that reminded him he was alone again. He didn't like it. His ears dropped again, his body slouched. He did look horrible, almost skin and bones, but it was practical survival for him, and he could take it, granted he was tired half the day and slept most of the time, but there was water, and as long as he had that, he made by. He gave a soft whimper, though she was probably out of ear shot, he didn't like being alone now that he'd seen her. He glanced around, seeing just the burnt area around him. Odd, strange even that he was so happy before, even acting goofy, and now a complete mood swing. His inner thoughts laughed at him.
'Upset that your mistress left you?' The thought rang. Gabriel gave a huff. "Of course I am..." As if it was surprised, it took a moment before responding back. 'Well, why don't you go look for her.' Gabriel gave a soft growl, rolling his eyes even, trying to see this invisible voice in his head. "She said to not wander, so I'm staying put."
'Lame' Gabriel wanted the voice to leave him alone, he shook his head and cleared his mind, watching the tree line for her to come back. His tail thumped hard on the ground when he saw the black female coming back, his drooped ears perking up instantly as he gave a smile, the smell of blood hitting his nostrils with the wind that carried it. At once his stomach lurched and his eyes went wide. She had caught something. When she dropped it, he stared at it, giving only a glance to her as she spoke.
"It's all yours. Once you're done, we'll go find the dens."
The phrase didn't even end before Gabriel dove upon the small rabbit and began to devour it hungrily. He was being an idiot however; eating it so fast would surely cause regurgitation. And by the time he finished it, the instincts were right. He gave a breath and winced some and a small whine when he puked half of it. "Ugh, stupid." He muttered to himself but devoured it again, this time keeping it down. He licked his chops, the blood tasting all too good and the satisfy stomach grumbled with thanks. It was small, but well worth it as Gabriel felt his strength returning to him from it. Before he moved, he picked up each of his forepaws, licking them deeply to assure they were clean, or at least he would think.
