The day had reached its highest point, the sun in the very center of the sky. It would have been scalding hot if not for the season, instead of heat there was a sweet, cooling breeze that kept everything at a perfect temperature. The small wolf weaved her way through the trees, her fur fluffing up as another blast of air shook her. She preferred this time of year, she had a short coat so summer was too hot and winter was too cold. But Autumn? That was her favorite. It was the perfect atmosphere, just warm enough to keep her from shivering.
The slave made her way to her former home, the fire had scared her off and had chased her far away. She had lost herself in the fear of death, allowing her long legs to carry her far, far away. When she had calmed herself and the stench of burning foliage had left her nostrils, she found herself extremely lost. It took her ages to find her way back to her pack, but why did she return? Echo was a slave here, a very low rank - the very lowest to be exact. So why did she not enjoy her freedom and relish in it? There were a certain number of things, one being that she didn't know a life outside of being a slave. She had been born into it, she knew nothing but it. Another was that her Mistress had been nothing but nice to her. She was sweet, understanding, and Echo found that she actually missed the pure white wolf. So there she was, making her way back to her homelands.
Echo cautiously circled around the camp, her nostrils flaring as the old scent of burnt wood assaulted her nose. She stirred up ash with her paws, causing her to sneeze with such violence that it shook her entire body. She recovered quickly and stepped inside the camp. The inside looked to be fairly untouched by the fire, it had been protected by the thick covering of bushes and heavier plants that were not quick to burn. The femme yipped a short welcome, unable to pick up the scent of anyone around. Could they have all disappeared? The Ethiopian wolf whined softly, hoping that wasn't true. She had walked all this way just to find them again!

Cautiously, step by step, she moved through the charcoaled foliage with diligence. She was careful about where she placed her paws, attempting to avoid the smoldering debris that scattered the outskirts of her lands. So far, this didn't look promising. So much of her home had been beat down into blackened ash and Hayashi was heartbroken. She had become accustomed to this land and had finally begun to put Sobibor behind her. Now, it was all rubble. What had caused this? How could the wolves have angered the gods to such an extent? The realization of what happened almost brought her to her knees. Who knew who was left alive after destruction like this.
As she moved further in, Hayashi began to catch glimpses of emerald and of life. Her heart fluttered with each ripe leaf she saw, each sound she heard. There was hope, afterall. Maybe, everyone was already here, waiting for her, welcoming her. After a moment, Hayashi shook her head. A silly thought, a silly, silly thought. How could they survive a disaster like this? As much as she wanted to believe it, she knew it coudn't be true. Even if they were alive, her pack wouldn't have stayed here. There was too much panic.
A sneeze, a yip. Just ahead.
She stopped in her tracks, her body stiffening, listening for any further sounds. Her eyes focused and she could see the main clearing not far in the distance. She dropped her head, picked up her pace, and headed straight toward the noise. As she neared the clearing, she could see a glimpse of glimmering red. Was that fire? It was almost impossible that it would still be burning. Bewildered, she quickened her pace even more, eager to see what lie ahead. As she maneuvered through the fallen branches and sprouting foliage, a thought hit her. Mahogany fur... a yip, a sneeze... Could it be Reiner ... ?Her heart skipped a beat, but she couldn't be too positive yet. She couldn't taste any scent besides burnt wood. She pushed through the thick, green wall of the bushes and scanned the area with body alert.
There was life, green grass. It was almost a haven inside the hell that surrounded it. The bushes, overgrown and dense, had stretched tall to defend the clearing, keeping the fire at bay. It was a refreshing view of color and hope.
Narrowing her eyes, she caught a glimpse of a wolf standing downwind of her. A red wolf indeed, but her gut told her it was not her dear Reiner. However, it still looked familiar to her blue eyes, and Hayashi was open to any company after travelling aloe for so long. Carefully, she glided through the tall grass, approaching the motionless figure. As she closed in, the figure became more detailed and recognizable. Yes, this was Echo. A timid slave who had come all the way back here in search of her pack, despite her rank. A very brave slave she must be.
Hayashi halted her cream paws just a few feet behind the wolf, a slight, welcoming smile gracing her chiseled face.
"You came back," she spoke.

The red female looked around camp, carefully sniffing at the ground and try to pick up any old scent of her old members here. Why did she come back? That she did not know. She was the lowest of low ranking, yet she just couldn't fade away because of a natural disaster. She was more loyal than that. But if she would run into her old master, that was still up in the air. Apparently not for long though, because a soft voice reached her one hearing ear. She turned around slowly, careful that her eyes did not meet her icy blue ones. "I could not just abandon you, my lady," she couldn't help wagging her tail a few times, a small smile pressed on her lips. She was happy to see that Hayashi has survived the nasty flames. That made her wild heart settle slightly.
Looking up a little bit, focusing on the cream wolf's nose, Echo spoke once again. "Has anyone else returned to this pack land? And what are we going to do?" She was slightly worried that the pack would be no more, but would that mean that she would be a free wolf? Those thoughts swirled through her mind, jumbling into one big mess of ideas. Would Hayashi set her free, or ask her to stay here and guard the camp while she looked for the others? The ideas were endless. But one thing was for sure, she was here now meaning that she was under the females command. She would do whatever was asked of her.
Settling on her rump, Echo looked over her Alpha to make sure that she was unharmed. She didn't see any wounds or singed fur, meaning that she got away in time. She cast her gaze around them then, at the protected area that made up their dens. How many memories she had here now. Could she just simply leave? It was a little too late for that though, she had already made herself known to Hayashi. She couldn't leave now. Plus she had to admit it to herself, she would miss the cream female. She had been kind to her, never raising a paw at her. Did she even want to leave that? Echo shook her head, scattering her thoughts. She needed to calm herself and wait to see what her Alphess said, and until then she could do nothing else.
