He had to admit, this land was interesting. Sure, it wasn't as beautiful as others, but it had a certain charm to it. It was enticing, and Mordecai wanted it. He craved to own this land. Ah, but he was getting ahead of himself there. There were still ideas to discuss, chinks to sort out. Today, Mordecai was observing. He would consider this a reconnaissance mission, noting the difficulties in the territory, watching the enemy and determining if they were a threat to him. Hopefully, Mordecai could observe the inhabitants at a distance but if one were to face him, Cai would willingly have a small 'chat' with said wolf. Perhaps he could gain more information that way, though he knew that this particular pack did not favour those who owned or supported slavery. Luckily for Mordecai, he had an interest in the slave trade. If he could just avoid the pack members, that would be fantastic. Of course, knowing how kind Life was, it was inevitable. Mordecai snarled softly at himself. He would cross that bridge when he came to it. He already had a plan on how to act if he encountered one of the occupants of the area. You're an innocent explorer. That should be enough. After all, who would want to kill off someone who desired to see the world? It was mostly the truth anyway. If any extra details were needed, Mordecai was sure that he could pull something from the past. Times surely hadn't changed that much?
Mordecai stopped and looked at the surroundings. He didn't ever recall being in a place that smelled as vile as this place. Despite the strong markers at the borders, the scents of the other wolves weren't apparent. Somehow, that was comforting. The presence of a pack... was not entirely welcome. The memories flashed violently in his mind and yet, Mordecai didn't flinch. It frightened him silently that he didn't... appear to care. The death of his sister didn't affect him in the slightest. Yes, she's dead. What can I do about it? The thought echoed coldly in his mind. Mordecai glanced over, as if expecting that she would be standing there. Unfortunately, the dead have a terrible habit of staying dead. When he saw that Circe was not there, the obsidian wolf huffed and set about to making progress once again. A sudden wave of nostalgia hit Mordecai like a strong gust of wind. He paused, waiting for the moment to pass and when it took longer than expected, he brought himself to a brisk walk. Still feeling sentimental, Mordecai decided to himself that should the emotion carry on through the day, he would visit the forest and pay his respects. Maybe even let her in on what new details he had added to the plan. She'd be pleased, Mordecai imagined. He thought about her sitting up in the clouds in the same kingdom of Iudex and Eperna, watching as Cai struggled in the mortal realm. It was a silly notion, albeit quite soothing.
Pay attention. Mordecai brought himself back to reality. The thoughts of his sister were pushed back into the deepest corners of his mind. He had to find some of the wolves and see what he could learn of them. Apparently, according to whispers Mordecai had heard on his travels, these wolves slept beneath the trees. Just then, Mordecai pictured a whole horde of wolves resting beneath the dwindling leaves, snow covering them in a thin layer. If such was the case, Mordecai would not be surprised if some had already dropped dead. Iudex had a way with bringing the snow, and He didn't seem to be particularly forgiving this year. Ah, there he went again. He was distracted today. The mere thought of missing something vital was infuriating. Mordecai started feeling irritation building up. If he fucked up today...! The wolf shook his head, dislodging the thought. He had to concentrate. Look around. What do you notice? There were lots of trees... And what does that mean? Aha... wolves could sneak up on him as well as making it difficult to navigate quickly for those that were less experienced with the terrain. And the swampy environment? Well, that not only deterred some wolves, but it also could provide some cover if he had to get away. A smile crept its way onto his ebony lips. Things were suddenly looking up.
NOTES: I finished! I think it's slightly better and a bit longer than the previous version. Never make me do that again!
