TEXT | SPEECH | THOUGHT
The walk from Auktion Rock to Süden was thankfully not very long. Decimus was silent the entire way, occasionally casting a glance at his newest sklavin, his thoughts churning persistently in his head. As he walked he mulled over the words she’d uttered before leaving Auktion Rock. ”I am only mortal,” she had said, and Decimus had not disagreed. He, too, was a mortal instrument of the Gods, something that was a painful reminder. He would have loved nothing more than to be unstoppable, un-killable…but that would make him a God himself, wouldn’t it? The Gods needed a way to control their subjects, and so they made him bleed, made him feel, made him weak…but he would have done the same in their position. He could not begrudge their intelligence.
As they crossed the border of Süden, Decimus lead Palais through the thick sanctuary of trees, gesturing to the small stream that ran alongside them. ”This is our sole source of water. It may look scarce now, but it widens considerably near the dens,” he said, voice rumbling and proud. To an outsider, Süden looked like a maze of thick, ominous trees, but to Decimus it was home. ”You will be able to find your way around here expertly, with time. You will be able to maneuver quickly and efficiently around the tight spaces between the trunks, while an outsider would not be so fortunate. You will always have the advantage. Not, however,” he added with a grin, ”that you will be doing very much defending. You are far too valuable for that.”
On and on they went until finally the stream widened, and Decimus stopped before the massive, gnarled tree that bent over the wide opening of the underground dens. ”It might seem stifling, at first,” he said as he gestured towards the dens with his muzzle. ”But you will be grateful on the colder days. It is quite sturdy, and the earth will not collapse on you. Claim whichever you would like, save for the largest section in the back.” This, Decimus assumed was self-explanatory. He sat back on his haunches then, gazing at Palais with his pale gray eyes. He still could not quite believe how fortunate he had been to find her. The thought of something so precious dwelling in the disgusting pit of filth that was Auktion Rock made his blood boil.
”I grow weary of tours and introductions, so I will make this swift. Osten and Norden are our neighbors, and they are extremely close. Be cautious, for it would be easy to accidentally wander into their territory. Both are claimed, and I do not wish to have to rescue you should you be taken or harmed. Should you ever find yourself in need of aid, call for me. I will not hesitate to do what I must.” While the thought of ripping into an opposing Dominor was tempting, Decimus would not risk Palais. ”Prey is bountiful. Deer can be found, hares are in abundance, and the silver fish in the stream are quite large. Hunt whatever you would like…except for the colorful lizards. They are the brightest of blue with heads the color of the sun, and while they look quite appealing, they bite. Hard.”
He grinned at his, his front paws still throbbing a reminder. Personally, they were his favorite things to hunt – he liked the sharp sting of their teeth and the small rivers of blood that welled and burst from his skin. However, Decimus was no stranger to the fact that most wolves did not enjoy pain.
”Now,” he began, ”on to more important matters. Tell me, Palais, why did your previous Dominors surrender you? Surely they must have known your worth?”
