CHALANDRA "Follow me."
Nirco's somewhat questionable response to her nighttime proposal had rung through her mind as she followed him in response over the lands. His personal masculine rumble wasn't the least bit lost by the repetition of her mind, and she wondered desperately what was slipping through his black-coated conscious. What had made him agree so easily? For once he hadn't fought her advances--in fact, he'd provided her a fresh meal and had accepted her for some mutual rest. Maybe she was getting through to him.
Either way, he still wasn't falling head over paws for her, which was definitely the end goal in most, if not all, circumstances. Chalandra increased her pace to jog shoulder to shoulder with the black male, her silver-grey coat in sharp contrast to his deep black one as they ran together. What freedom. The land scraped steadily by the pair, and the she-wolf growled with a slight zest as the emotions fell through her. Even though she was a freior and without a wolf to rule over her, this was a feeling she hadn't felt in quite sometime. Companionship. The wind whipped past them as they moved, and she could hear Nirco's easy breathing just under her own. Small chills spread over her as she tried to imagine his breathing in other activities. Heavy and panting, matched only by her sultry advances... She'd gotten him this far. At this point, she was unstoppable.
Night had fallen rather slowly on the land, with the sky still rather pale and filled with a strange, sickly sweet composite of heather greys and dying orange rays. Where were they? Chalandra's blue eyes flickered uneasily as they crossed a small stream, cutting into the nearest patch of brush that moved steadily downhill. She'd certainly never been somewhere like this. She honestly hadn't known such a place existed in Ravensbruck. It was bare of most trees until a little way deeper into the valley, and up near the higher points the grasses were short and stubbly, growing longer and deeper as the altitude decreased.
Nirco's pace had slowed considerably, and her own mimicked him as they sunk further into the land. He seemed to be rather focused on something. Time to find out what was going on with him.
"So this is the best place you could conjure up for a rendezvous? Interesting choice, Nico."
She playfully twisted his name at the end, sauntering forward to investigate the cluster of trees she'd spotted earlier. They were strangely set, as if hiding something, and Chalandra curiously cast a glance back at the raven-black male. Her brow was quirked and her blue eyes sparkled in the fading light.
"Whats this place called?"

The way Chalandra had looked at him had troubled Nirco considerably. He had met plenty of wolves in his days, even if his social contact had dwindled greatly over the last few years. They had seen him, he had seen them. But none had ever really looked at him like that. Like they were searching for something even if he himself didn't know if he had anything worth finding. All he had been was alpha's favorite, beta's son or dangerous stranger to nearly everyone. It felt quite odd to discover this new companion of his could have such a profound impact with one little look. And that was what was so troubling. The male already felt too involved. Involvement with others wasn't something he was used to now nowadays. It also troubled him that he was the center of her attention. Perhaps when he was younger he would or relished it. But it had been so long since those days that he had grown unused to such attention. And it wasn't just the attention, it was also the affection. How in the hell did one return such things? Nirco had lost all sense on this, and he wasn't sure if he wanted to regain it or not.
He thought on this as they ran, the grey she-wolf keeping pace with him every step of the way. How odd it was to have her by his side. He wasn't sure if he should shy away from her proximity, as he had every other time, or draw a few inches closer. He simply didn't know what he wanted or what was even appropriate to want. Back at the beach, Nirco had considered leaving her there to fend for herself. He had provided her with a meal and brief company and in his mind that normally would of been enough. But she had sounded fairly helpless talking about the oncoming darkness, that he just couldn't bring himself to do it. And then there was the fact that the thought of splitting ways distressed him for some reason. Most of his life, the black brute had wandered alone across the vast landscape, relishing the freedom it brought. Was that what he still sought? To be alone? He almost felt angry at Chalandra for muddling his mind.
Nirco hated how confused he felt, and so he focused solely on what lay ahead and his destination. It was quite cold at night with the ocean's breeze sweeping inland. It was uncomfortable, even for a large animal such as himself and he certainly didn't want to spend his time in the open and at the mercy of the wind when the sun finally dropped bellow the horizon, taking it's heat with it.
"So this is the best place you could conjure up for a rendezvous? Interesting choice, Nico."
His ears flattened back at the distortion of his name. Of course, out of all the wolves in the land he found himself drawn to, it had to be this one. With an audible growl, he stalked towards the cluster of trees and shrubs that had sheltered him on a few occasions. It smelt of other wolves that maybe had the same idea as he, but the freshest scent was at least a week old.
"What's this place called?"
"I don't know. I never stopped to ask" he said, inspecting the shelter of leaves and branches cautiously to make sure there was nobody occupying the place. It was the honest truth. The first time Nirco had been here was long after he had had any packmates to tell him about the area. And to Nirco, it didn't really matter. What was a name, anyway? As long as a place suited his needs, he cared not what it was called. "You're free to go and find someone to ask if you're so curious, though" he teased, almost lightheartedly. It felt odd to be so... friendly. But he shrugged the peculiar feeling off as he lay himself down by the trunk of a small tree with full intentions of ignoring her for the night. But something told him it might not be that easy.

CHALANDRA "I don't know. I never stopped to ask."
Nirco subsequently moved to investigate the overhang of trees, Chalandra hanging back to watch in silence. He really was a curious wolf, when she took the time to stop and just let him do his thing. He was so self-sufficient and sure of himself. The she-wolf hung back, her stomach beginning to swirl uncomfortably. He looked at home on his own.
"You're free to go and find someone to ask if you're so curious, though."
What? Just when she'd begun to relax, Silent-paws was at it again, throwing her for a loop with his jovial teasing. He laid down by the nearest tree trunk, and Chalandra almost laughed at his posture. It was all too clear that he hoped she would leave him alone--his closed eyes and immediate, resting position was body language enough for her--but he knew her better than that by now. Slinking forward in a fake show of furtiveness, Chalandra slid into the depression in the ground beside Nirco, inwardly relishing the rough press of his body against her.
"I'd much rather stay here and do whatever I can to keep you pleased. You're keeping me safe for the night, so if there is anything I can do..."
Chalandra's voice was hardly a whisper and she rolled over and faced Nirco. She ended the words on a slight growl, with her blue eyes flashing wildly. Out here, under the trees and with darkness gathering... Ahh. The silver-grey fur rippled with chills of muted excitement and a wind tickled the landscape. They were finally comfortable and utterly alone, without anything to distract them. Her heart had begun racing a while back, but Chalandra only realized it then, after the world had stopped moving and the quiet was echoed by the soft coo of nightingales.
It was only them, as a pair, in this painting, with the night sky falling into place and the gentle crisp air of night forcing her to snuggle ever closer. At this point, Chalandra had practically given up the idea of boundaries and personal space--if he wasn't at least relatively comfortable with her at this point, they had bigger problems. In fact, she had flirting to do. The ashen she-wolf growled softly as they laid together, nudging the male further to elicit a response. She wasn't the slightest bit hesitant as she playfully moved a paw over Nirco's black body, but as her muzzle came into contact with his, a spark of surprise ripped through her.
Let the games begin

He heard her approach before he felt it, body tensing at the contact of her form snuggling up against his. If anything, Nirco had grown used to her presence. But the physical contact was something that he was most definitely not accustomed to, and he wasn't sure if he liked it or not. When was the last time someone had dared enter his personal space so boldly as she? He couldn't remember though it certainly must of been a few years. His species was a social one, but the male had grown unsure how to handle such situations. If he had seen her as a threat, he certainly would of torn through her as he had the unfortunate slave owner he'd killed just recently. Luckily for Chalandra, she was more just a nuisance that, for some reason, he was putting up with.
"I'd much rather stay here and do whatever I can to keep you pleased. You're keeping me safe for the night, so if there is anything I can do..."
Backing off is what you can do! Were the first words to come to mind, but he didn't voice them. Probably because he wasn't sure if he felt them true or not. Did he want her to go away and find her own little corner? He certainly was uncomfortable by the proximity, as he had been since they first met. Yet he was indeed still very much male, and her continuing advances were slowly yet surely breaking down his barriers and self control. Nirco disliked the notion that he was letting her get to him and tried desperately to rebuild the crumbling walls. He was so very confused.
It was the contact of her muzzle brushing against his own that sent the brute over the edge. Except, it probably wasn't in the way she had been hoping. In the blink of her pretty blue eyes, he had her on her back and trapped beneath him with a threatening snarl ripping from his throat. His features, usually completely stoic or downcast in a glare had transformed into bearing teeth and wild eyes. He could of bitten her with a vicious attack and the idea briefly crossed his mind, but he held back. It took the male a moment to regain his senses enough to wonder what the hell he was doing. She was only a harmless she-wolf, after all. One that had done nothing to cause him pain. Sure, she was a bit of a pain in his ass but maybe that's what made her so endearing. Maybe that's why he wanted her around, even if he had no idea how to deal with it. With this, he slowly began to relax and what was once the look of savagery turned into something almost pitiful.
With a whine, he was off of her and fleeing for the closest opening in the brush for an escape. However, he did not go more than few yards outside the cluster of trees before he stopped to think about what just happened. Nirco was not too sure what had caused his sudden outburst. He'd spent much of his years as a freior, alone, focused on one day finding that bastard of an alpha he'd once considered a second father. That had been his goal through much of his life and he'd completely removed himself from others to the point he no longer knew how to cope with them. Chalandra was a peculiar wolf but certainly not one deserving of this unpredictable temperament that he seemed to have developed. The overwhelming feeling of guilt was quickly taking hold of every fiber of his being, an apology seemed like a good idea. But Nirco had no idea how to say it or even if there was still someone there to present it to. And just like that, he was fearful that he'd chased her away.

CHALANDRA As Nirco's rage overtook him, Chalandra's body froze. He was all anger and fury, with those blazing blue eyes and the seemingly spiked black fur. He didn't look like Nirco. He looked more like a dominor, more like some of her older masters.. For once in her life, Chalandra was genuinely scared for herself; the automatic response mechanism told her to shove her muzzle forward and snarl back. Her effort was driven by distress and her eyes told the emotions well enough. There were two sets of glittering white teeth, one driven by extreme irritation, the other created from overall anxiety.
It didn't occur to her to run, for although Nirco was obviously being rash in his decision making, Chalandra was certain in his overall and natural demeanor. He wasn't someone to hurt others. Right? The question echoed in her mind between the seconds that sluggishly blinked past, watching his face for any sign of change in behavior or motive. He's not going to hurt me. He's not going to hurt me. It was something she'd repeated to herself before, and Chalandra trembled as she remembered the outcomes of the previous scenarios.
And then, as quick as his rage had come, Nirco's eyes became pained and the brute pulled his weight off of her smaller frame. He bolted for the nearest exit from the grove, a few pebbles from the ground scattering in his wake. Chalandra, her whole body tensed and ready for a fight of some sort, laid on the ground for a minute or two as she processed what had just happened. She'd obviously pushed him too far. But why then? Why did he snap now, after all this time? What had she done that was so bad?
Anger at the black wolf threatened to flood over her, anger at the situation, anger at herself for pursuing him, anger at Nirco for making her look weak and pathetic. What the hell was he trying to do? Did he hate her that much? And the way he looked near the end--if that had been pity in his eyes, she wanted to shred him. She didn't need his pity. She chose this life. It was hers to do what she wanted with. A fierce mixture of general confusion and anxiety from the lingering moments fell over her, and in her dazed state, Chalandra rose from the ground, shook her pelt, and stalked out to sort the situation, for better or worse.
"What the hell was that? Who in Eperna's name do you think you are?"
Her voice was all rage, all fury, all emotion. And then, after a moment of staring puzzled and irate at the male, her voice dropped and she spoke with a softer sadness.
"What do you take me for? What am I to you?"
There, she said it. She liked him more than most males she stumbled across, and this game was the worst kind. She wasn't in control. She was pursuing him with little, if any response to drive her on. Waiting, her heart racing and her stomach clenched, Chalandra stood in agony. I look like a pathetic whelp, being all emotional like this..

"What the hell was that? Who in Eperna's name do you think you are"
Eperna? Nirco hadn't heard that name spoken in quite some time and it took him a moment to recall who it belonged to. He had stopped believing in such things as gods and goddesses around the time his parents were slain and the mention of such beings irked him. But he did not focus on this. Instead, he focused on the fact that the she-wolf hadn't fled for her life, one that he had no intention of taking. She stayed? He had attacked her, even if he had not physically harmed her. It had been his bodies reaction to something he had no idea how to deal with, and he hated himself for it. Hated himself with every fiber of his being. He pitied himself for what he had become. And worst of all, he had no idea how to explain this reasoning behind what he'd just done. He was silent in her questioning.
"What do you take me for? What am I to you?"
These were questions he had not been expecting and again, silence ensued. But he knew standing there like the fool he was wasn't going to satisfy Chalandra. She wanted answers that he did not know how to give. She was so very different than him, confident in her words. With legs he only now realized felt weak, he took a few steps towards her. But he was hesitant in an approach, not knowing if it was a wise idea or not. Nirco found himself wanting her company, if only he could overtake his bodies natural reaction to flee from it. Just like it was natural for friends or lovers to band together, it had become natural for him to seek solitude.
He stopped a good ten feet from the she-wolf, piecing together any words he could possibly muster at that moment. "I take you for someone that's far better than me." He was honest in his words, knowing and feeling like he was a disgrace to their species after what just happened. Not many wolves would seclude themselves for so long and let it overtake them as he had. Nirco had been happy on his own, not fully realizing the toll it had taken on him until Chalandra had shown up and shoved it right in his face. With struggling words, he spoke again. "It was not my intention to snap as I did" he was doing a terrible job of explaining himself and with an irritated huff at his own incompetence, Nirco found himself pacing back and forth and desperately seeking the right thing to say. It never came.

CHALANDRA "I take you for someone that's far better than me."
Hmph. What kind of answer was that exactly? With the tension trembling between the pair, Chalandra briefly scanned Nirco's body language for any sign of his internal feelings. He'd crept closer to her as he spoke, with his black tail not raised as it had been moment prior. That wild, aggressive look in his eyes had died down as well. Interesting. Where Nirco's fur lay flat and calm, the hair on the back of her neck was spiked and ruffled, and Chalandra had no intention of settling down anytime soon--especially with a pathetic excuse like that.
"It was not my intention to snap as I did."
There was hardly a moment's pause before Chalandra stepped forward and interjected angrily.
"What was your intention then? To see if I kept my cool under pressure?!"
She watched as he paced before her, his head down and his mind in obvious disagreement with itself. She stalked over to step in his way, throwing an ashen paw out to visibly halt him.
"You don't even know what you meant, or want--with me, with others, or with yourself."
The blue eyes forced themselves on Nirco, flashing with a strange, heated intensity. And then, the she-wolf turned away, walking deliberately back up the valley's side, toward the place they had first come from.
"I obviously can't do anything for you. Good luck finding yourself, Silent-paws."
Slurring his nickname, Chalandra launched herself on, leaving the small tree grove. She wasn't going to hang around a place like this, with him being unreasonable and her emotions too wild to seriously discern what she was really feeling from what she wasn't. The she-wolf hadn't the slightest idea where she was--truth be told, she'd been watching Nirco's strong movement as they journeyed--but she didn't care. She'd find her way, with or without him.
As she moved, Chalandra was half tempted to look back and see what kind of expression Nirco had on his face. If he had any reaction at all, you mean. Being the quiet type that he was, he probably was just standing there watching her leave. He was so frustrating! Growling in irritation, the silver fur dashed over the top of the valley's crest before moving onto more flat land. Chalandra forced herself to keep looking forward, the blue eyes already missing their equal in Nirco.
Why did she feel for him? It was the smallest of feelings, but it was there, deep within her. He was stubborn and cold-hearted and rude and incompetent with relationships... He was also sacrificing and a listener, he was a provider and someone who didn't want her just for the night life. He was strong and able to care for her. He's like Hroth in a way, she realized with a jolt. At that moment, Chalandra froze and considered what she had just concluded, her memories buzzing.
And then, with a fierce determination, she kept walking from the valley, her mind more troubled and more resolute than before. She didn't need someone to care for her. Her days with her brother were over. Those days had ended months ago. Trying to pick up those pieces would be like trying to build a sand castle on the shore.
One day, it would all amount to nothing again.
