PHRINO Against the pale morning of Regnen's rising mist, a golden blur raced. The color pounded vivaciously against the sprouting buds and dark wood, sprinting and zigzagging uncontrollably across the land. Phrino, his breath coming in ragged gasps, was going all out. He needed to test himself, he needed to keep himself in shape. His days as one of Dachau's most respected Zielles might have gone to the wayside, but that didn't mean he should slack off. The ladies had loved him for his physique and charm, and Phrino would rather face his old Alpha Erus in a one-on-one duel than be caught in anything less than peak condition.
As he ran, Phrino gradually made his way toward the southern border. His pace slowed and he allowed himself a breather as he gazed at his surroundings. It was a beautiful morning in Regnen, although a quiet one, and there was silence in the woods as he moved. It was almost unnaturally quiet. Then again, the last time he'd seen another wolf had been weeks ago. The fire had been debilitating, ripping through the northern parts of Regnen without so much as a blade of grass left to stand. Everyone had fled in different directions, unable to come together as a unit under Erus' leadership. The last he'd seen of Wicca had been her golden eyes. After that, her fur disappeared into the bushes next to him and she was gone. Just like that. In his life for a few weeks and then lost to him again.
It wasn't like he could honestly be upset with her antics, however. In the last few weeks together he'd pushed her away, unable to rekindle what they had back in Dachau before the slave traders and her untimely absence. He didn't want to deal with the drama and he certainly didn't want to deal with falling so madly in love with her again. Not like that. She'd just up and leave him. 'Or get run out of Regnen by a wild forest fire,' Phrino though sarcastically to himself. Anymore, it seemed the gods were never on his side, no matter who he prayed to.
As the male trotted further north, the change in smell was the first key indication. It wasn't Erus' typical scent, rather something more of a pine aroma. Definitely still male. By the dominance and sheer placement, Phrino guessed a challenger. It was the only thing that made logical sense, other than a wandering freior, which would have been rather unusual for these parts.
Better greet them with congratulations and a meal waiting like a good sklavin... Phrino, his fur spiked in anticipation of what was to come, tilted his head back and let loose a howl of meeting, asking the new owner or visitor to drop by. He made it short but strong, hopefully overriding any possibility that the sklavin rank could be traced through his voice. In wait, he sat back on his haunches and let his ears prick up into their typical Zielle alertness.
After a few moments of waiting, there was movement in the bushes up ahead. Soft movement, but movement nonetheless. As the figure come into view, the jokester side of Phrino fell into place and he motioned a paw forward as he mockingly welcomed the new wolf.
"Your majesty. Welcome to Regnen."
What an introduction. There were only two ways this meeting could go. It was time to play his cards, for better or for worse.

``STOLZ The male had spent most of the day wandering around his new territory, setting up his scent markers everywhere. It was quite a large area, and he was learning every nook and cranny of it. He took it all into his mind and didn't let it go. He wasn't going to lose his lands again, he would protect these ones even more fiercely. That is why when a howl broke through the silence, Stolz whipped his head around and immediately took off towards the sound.
It took awhile for him to reach the other wolf as he had been on the other side of Regnen. He crouched low in a nearby bush, trying to gaze at the wolf on the other side. He looked to be a bit of a smaller wolf with a multihued coat. With large ears pricked forward and he way he was holding himself, he looked like an average wolf. Well built, yes, and lean. He would make a fine hunter or messenger. When he saw the brutes ears twitch, it let him know that he was aware of him being there. Clearing his throat, Stolz stepped through the bush and dipped his head in greeting. The wolf barked a greeting, mockingly bowing his leg. The male snorted in reply, smirking and shaking his head. "While I appreciate the greeting, I could go without the mockery," he said. He sniffed at the wolf, pushing past his musty scent and found that he smelled of the stale stench of the previous pack. "So were you once a member of this pack? I would be more than willing to welcome you back with open arms."
Stolz gazed at the brute with his stunning green eyes, sizing him up slightly. From his body language he seemed to be sure of himself, but there was a bit of tenseness in his muscles that did not get past him. While it could be from encountering a new Alpha in ones old homeland, he suspected it was because he was hiding something from him. The gray wolf chose to ignore it, they had just met and he did not expect him to tell him everything. "What was your previous rank here before I came? Because I run things a little differently," he grumbled, speaking of course about the other packs and their compulsion to having slaves. He hated it, one wolf could not own another. It wasn't right, and he couldn't stand it. There would be no slaves in his pack, and he would often go Auktion Rock just to save the poor creatures. -------------------- Words | 432 Music | --- Muse | Low Notes | My next post should be better, just trying to get a hold of his character again.

PHRINO "While I appreciate the greeting, I could go without the mockery,"
Phrino simply grinned in response. Ha, as if.
"So were you once a member of this pack? I would be more than willing to welcome you back with open arms."
Between the two, the tension crackled slightly when Phrino kept his stance. There was an obvious distrust between the two; on Phrino's side from the sheer presence of a new Alpha; on the new comer's side for Phrino's bold stature. Still, the former Zielle refused to speak. He needed to know more about this so called "Alpha" before he'd get his loyalty and support.
"What was your previous rank here before I came? Because I run things a little differently,"
Phrino narrowed his eyes for a moment before he lifted himself off the ground. He moved forward to come within a comfortable distance to the male, keeping his tacit demeanor and watching him with the golden eyes as he had done so many times back in Dachau. The more he observed, the more the male looked like someone he knew. With the amount of wolves he'd come into contact with, recognition was impossible without a name. Probably a slave trader I met before. Phrino realized instantly that he needed to be one his toes if he wanted to lose his sklavin title. He wasn't one to fold belly up, and he certainly wasn't going to go by the wayside now. Not with his freedom lingering so close he could taste it. As if the knowledge were obvious, Phrino spun his web.
"I was one of Regnen's pack members. From what you've said, I'm assuming you're the new leader?"
There was a small barb in Phrino's words, as if testing the newcomer. He wasn't about to label him as an "Alpha". That rank was reserved for wolves who earned it by and through the unity of their packs. This wolf's ways were certainly different, and the Dachau native wasn't exactly sure what to make of the whole situation. The best course of action would be to play the safest card and wait until the next round. He pulled his shoulders back, falling almost naturally into his former Zielle self. He had to be convincing. He'd been a high ranking officer for years before now; this surely would prove to be no problem.
Phrino, curiosity getting the better of him, finally asked the question he'd been most interested in. This wolf looked strangely familiar...
"My name is Phrino. And you might be...?"

``STOLZ The tension between the two was very noticeable, both of them could feel it. It made his hackles bristle slightly, on edge. His whole body was on edge, standing ridged as if preparing for battle. If it came to blows, he was ready. He looked at the other brute who was clearing going through the same thing, distrust apparent in his eyes. Stolz didn't blame him, it could be quite a shock to return to your home and find a new Alpha in charge. This thought made the brute noticeably settle himself, calmly placing his rump on the earth. It was a bold move for the Alpha to settle first, but in a situation like this he wanted to show that he was willing to calm down and have a civil conversation with the male.
He watched with careful eyes as the other one moved closer to him, closing the large gap between them that he had allowed. When his question was asked, he could tell that the male took them in, tossing them over in his mind and thinking hard of a response. He seemed to be very calculating, and he liked that. His tail thumped on the ground a few times in amusement, a smirk playing across his features. He could tell that he was going to like this one already. When an answer finally came from him, Stolz's ears perked forward to gather every syllable of it. When he asked about him being the new leader, he simply nodded his head. "I was walking through these lands to try and regain my pack members after my old kingdom was destroyed by the fire. When no scent of any wolf reached me, I could tell that these lands had been abandoned. So I took the opportunity that made itself present and claimed Regnen as my own. I am glad to have run into a member of the old pack, as I do not know much history of these lands and would love to collect some of it. Who was the old Alpha who ruled here?" Stolz could very well tell that this male was hiding a large piece of information from him, such as the fact that he never answered what title he once held here. From the sounds of it, he was trying to work his way up the ladder by playing his cards right. His green eyes glimmered with the joy of the game they were playing, and he laid down his next card then.
"I know that you will like the new Regnen better. If the old alpha kept slaves," nearly spitting out the word, the male shook himself before moving on, "I do not do the same thing. I believe it is wrong to hold ownership over a wolf, don't you agree?" he asked, a sly smile replacing his smirk. "I give every wolf an equal chance to prove themselves and gain their own title, whether it be a hunter, or a Baron as I say, a fighter or a Knight, a messenger or a squire, or even a nurse if that wolf shows adept skills with pups and their mothers."
After breaking down the ranks, he allowed a moment for all of this information to sink into the male. He was the first to break the silence, introducing himself as Phrino. He asked for his own name, and he shook his head slowly. "I am sorry for not introducing myself before Phrino. I am Stolz, the former King of Koravelle. My home was destroyed by the fire, and I wish to build a new one here. With your help - if you will provide it - we can restore Regnen to its former glory. What say you?" he asked. He liked the way this male thought, and if he proved himself, he was thinking of giving him the title of his second in command. He tried to hint at it with his words said, asking this wolf's assistance with the pack. He was practically dangling the position of his Duke in front of him, all he had to do was reach out, grab it, and prove himself worthy.
Stolz really liked this Phrino.

PHRINO "I was walking through these lands to try and regain my pack members after my old kingdom was destroyed by the fire. When no scent of any wolf reached me, I could tell that these lands had been abandoned. So I took the opportunity that made itself present and claimed Regnen as my own. I am glad to have run into a member of the old pack, as I do not know much history of these lands and would love to collect some of it. Who was the old Alpha who ruled here?"
Phrino, his gaze carefully guarded, said nothing and allowed the strange male to continue on. He'd let him get his whole talk out before giving him any information on the previous Alphas, regardless of how much distaste he'd had for Erus and Shard. Dipping his head for the wolf to continue, Phrino made sure his posture was freior worthy.
"I know that you will like the new Regnen better. If the old alpha kept slaves, I do not do the same thing. I believe it is wrong to hold ownership over a wolf, don't you agree?"
Interesting pause, Phrino thought to himself. Either he knew, or he suspected. Heart quickening, the sandy male forced the anxiety down. He had said he didn't keep slaves. That had to be a good thing--right?
"I give every wolf an equal chance to prove themselves and gain their own title, whether it be a hunter, or a Baron as I say, a fighter or a Knight, a messenger or a squire, or even a nurse if that wolf shows adept skills with pups and their mothers."
And even more interesting titles. Phrino was half tempted to scrunch his nose up in disgust at the title of Baron--being much more used to the German-sounding phonetics of Dachau's society--and kept the stoic face he'd been able to sport so far.
"I am sorry for not introducing myself before, Phrino. I am Stolz, the former King of Koravelle. My home was destroyed by the fire, and I wish to build a new one here. With your help - if you will provide it - we can restore Regnen to its former glory. What say you?"
Former King of Koravelle? Oh, so this was the brute that thought he owned the place! Phrino narrowed his eyes a moment, looking over the male as if deciding what to make of him. He was sure his tale was true; his general air of confidence and the small details made the story convincing enough. The part that bothered him was the ending, how he wanted his wolves to prove themselves. In a sense it reminded him of the Zielle corp, how they gained rank through completed missions and actions they performed. It appealed heavily to him, and although it tugged at his heart, Phrino couldn't help but think something was wrong with the picture.
At one point, this wolf had demanded the loyalties of all the lands' packs, without knowledge of what he wanted or where he had come from. In Phrino's mind, he could think of nothing more laughable. Loyalties were rightfully earned over the course of time and through the battles of life. Phrino studied Stolz more closely as he considered what to say. He seemed calm enough, and his facial features seemed to hide nothing. Deciding upon instinct--which had gotten him this far--Phrino spoke on an absolute impulse.
"The oldest Alpha I can recall was Shard. He was here for a short while before Erus challenged him and won. Erus was a large supporter of slavery, so I wouldn't expect too many sklavins from his rule to return."
Phrino took a moment to think over the old members he recalled from his fresh, yet short time in Regnen. There had been himself, Wicca, that Aditi she-wolf, Merona, and Vernado... Ah! That was it. Vernado.
"Wait--there was one other Alpha. Vernado I think he was called, and he came back as a regular pack member. I think he planned on taking over Regnen from the inside but after the fire northeast of here, everyone fled for fear it would spread. Besides, so many wolves were crossing our borders from the flames that it was impossible to make sure everyone who was supposed to be in Regnen was."
Or, at least Erus hadn't seemed to have cared at that point. Although the flames hadn't jumped as far as Regnen, Phrino could still remember the smell and the general sense of anxiety the commotion had caused. He remembered Wicca leaving, the flash of her pelt as she left for her 'freedom'... Without him. Again. Bitterness welled up in the male and he angrily tried to suppress it in front of Stolz. What a weakling he was becoming over that stupid she-wolf ever since he left Dachau.
Phrino, trying to get his thoughts back on track, licked his chest for a brief a moment to gather himself.
"As for what you've said about how you'd like to rule... I think that sounds like a good start. How do you plan on getting members? Contrary to popular belief, sklavins do not create a pack. They create a mass of followers, not innovators."
He'd heard rumors that the Irrsin pack was one who thought like this, and Phrino was one to shake his head at such logic. Sklavins (at least, wolves who were sklavin from birth) were made for one purpose: to follow. To pay close attention to specific dictations and commands and to ensure they were completed satisfactorily. Zielles, on the other hand, were forced to think outside of the box, forced to find opportunity and get the mission completed. Phrino, the pride growing in him at the thought, gazed at Stolz as he spoke again.
"I say let's get to work. It's been a long time since I've lived in a legitimate pack setting."
Phrino moved forward to offer his paw as was custom when a new Alpha was appointed in Dachau. It was a tradition that would be lost on Stolz for certain, but for Phrino it meant the possibility of a leader he could support. It would take time, but at least it was a start.
"What should we begin with?"

``STOLZ The male took in all of Phrino's facial expressions, thinking of what he had said before and weighing in what he looked like. What he had gathered so far was this; he was still being guarded, protecting information that he had and not sharing it. This Stolz could understand, he was still a stranger to this wolf and he had not yet stated that he wished to follow him. He too would hide information if the roles were reversed. He also seemed to be checking up on his body position quite a few times, making minor adjustments that he only picked up a few times. He knew that he was hiding something major, but Stolz was in no position at the moment to force it out of him, nor did he want to. He watched as some sort of emotion jerked through him, but it was gone before he could tell what it was. He mentally shook his head, moving on. He was not going to question this wolf on every little thing that he did.
When Stolz announced his old title, he could tell that Phrino did not like it. He sighed softly, he knew that this would come into question. He did regret what he did to Ravensbruck, demanding its loyalty and taking claim over it even though he had no right. He could understand where the distaste in the males look came from. "I can understand your thought there Phrino, I did something that I am not proud of. When the fire tore apart my lands and I watched hopelessly, I realized what I had done. Maybe the fire came from the gods to punish me, I do not know though. I should have not stormed in from beyond the mountains and acting like I owned these lands. I have toned it down after that, and I wish to not make the same mistake," He nodded his head at the end of his speech, noticing that something else was bothering Phrino. He sifted back through his words, trying to think of what else could be bothering him. He couldn't tell for sure, so he studied the wolf. The male was very good about not giving anything away though. With a soft laugh, he went on. "If there is anything that you wish to question, don't be afraid to say anything. Please, I do not wish to lose a second home."
Stolz found himself opening up to Phrino more than he expected. Maybe it was because he found that he really liked him, and there was something about him that tugged at his heart string. Not in... a lovey way of course. Gross. No! More of a family way, like one would feel about a sibling. Then Phrino finally spoke, and Stolz's whole body seemed to lean forward to pick up every word. He spoke of old alphas. Shard he knew, he had come here to speak with him long ago. While he thought his attentions were pure, he knew now that he had been wrong. But the other he spoke of, Erus, he did not know. He nodded his head when appropriate, loving the fact that he was telling him this information. When he heard of the Vernado character, he almost shivered. Taking over the pack from the inside was a very risky move, and one of much betrayal. He liked to trust his pack members with all of his heart, not wanting to question their every move. Plus an alpha without the trust of their members was not a good alpha at all. But he snapped back to reality, nodding his head at Phrino. "Thank you very much for sharing that information with me. I will never forget that you did me a service."
Stolz accepted the pause that Phrino took to gather his thoughts. He watched as he bent over to lick at his chest, taking the time to gather his own thoughts. He was really growing to like this male, and was thinking of appointing him his Duke. He had the calculating, steady mind that he would love to have at his side. But this was not the time to bring it up, not the time to spring this thought on the male. What if Phrino thought that Stolz was desperate for someone to fill the position? That would not be appropriate. He would see how their meeting went, then maybe bring it up with him later.
When Phrino brought up the question of gaining new pack members, he blinked at him steadily. What a bold, yet straight forward question to ask. Stolz smiled at the male, beaming at him. "I like the ay you think Phrino. I was going to ask you about any pack members that may wish to return here, and if you think that we could scout them out. Also, I could go to Auktion Rock and free slaves, bringing them back here to fill some warrior and scout positions. There are a lot of free-roamers out and about, I think by just wandering around a bit we could easily find new members. Regnen is a large territory with a lot of prey to be hunted. With the draw of not having slaves, I believe that we can find like minded wolves that will join our numbers. Did you have any ideas?" he asked, very highly respecting his opinion.
"I say let's get to work. It's been a long time since I've lived in a legitimate pack setting."
Stolz briskly nodded his head, pride searing through him. Perhaps the time was now to bring it up. "Phrino, through our discussion I have come to very much like and trust you. With your ideas and your knowledge of these lands, I believe that you will be a big asset to our pack. This may be too soon to ask, and I would never force you on this. I would like you to consider being my Duke, my second in command. I do not know much of these lands customs, but I think that as a team we can once again become one of the strongest packs. Not only in force, but also in the power of mind. If you wish to take time to think this over, take all the time you need. I do not need an answer right away. But I will say, I would love to have you help me lead this pack."
After his lengthy speech, the male offered up his paw to him. Stolz blinked at it slowly, reaching out and placing his own paw on top of Phrino's. It may have been a tradition, but Stolz was all about starting his own. "Let us begin with marking these lands with both of our scents." With a beaming smile, he replaced his paw on the ground and began to trot towards the border.
