Amulet hurried to through the forest to the water’s edge, her breath coming in ragged gasps. It had been years since Jay had died, yet she still missed him and traveled to their favorite spot every day to sit and watch the falls crash into the rocks below. Oh Jay I miss you too much, it hurts too much. Why did you have to go and leave me? Amulet sighed and felt a tear slid down her muzzle. All the friends she had once had, had moved on without her. She was stuck in the past and was unable to let go. She knew that she should let go of Jay and accept what was, but she was still too much in love with the black wolf.
Amulet’s dusty pelt shone slightly in the sun as she gazed into the water staring at her reflection. A few tears dripped off her muzzle and fell into the water, as her paw circled, making ripples in the clear beautiful water. The waterfall roared at her side but she loved it and submerged herself into an old memory, one of her fondest of Jay. “Come on Am, you can swim,” his shimmering black pelt glistened in the shiny light of the sun. His pelt was slicked back with water, plastered to his lean body. His green eyes challenged her to get into the water. “Oh that’s right you can’t swim!” His laugh, Amulet had loved it.
“Jay!” Amulet exclaimed as he flashed her a quick smile. That day had been the day when she learned to swim. Jay had taught her, even though it had taken them all morning to actually get Amulet into the water.
When Amulet pulled herself from that memory she had tears in her eyes again and she watched them drip carelessly into the water watching it ripple. word count: 315

MARZELL Snow flew haphazardly through the air as a black shadow lunged through the forest, the churning of smaller paws distinct in the silent, winter air. The male's breath billowed as he ran, the excitement running itself clean through with the sprinting and jittery running. Every now and then the young wolf would leap in the air and let a bark slip off his lips before he threw his head and his weigh forward, pressing on through the flakes and lumps of white powder. The whole world was new to him; everything from the smallest scurrying vole to the tall pines above interested his raging youth, driving him on as the adventure continued.
Eventually he slide to a cautious stop, his ears pricked and muscles tightened as he leaned forward to listen. It was a strange roaring sound that echoed through the trees, rattling his senses as he struggled to comprehend what the noise was or where it was located. With a brief glance backwards, Marzell sprung off into the forest again. He was more cautious as he moved this time however, his eyes peeled for the bizarre bellowing that shook the forest's tallest occupants.
Before him spanned a clearing and Marzell strode forward, his chest puffed out as it always was. But the regal posture fell as his eyes took in the scene before him, his eyes widening and his mouth left hanging agape.
"Woah."
Before him pounded pounds of water, the rush and flow screaming at him as he stood. Sparkling blue colors and white rays flashed through the flicker of water as it flew downward, falling, falling falling. Marzell hadn't the words to even begin to express how stunning the sight of the waterfall was. He'd never known how close it had been to Irrsin territory either. Then it struck him how small he was in stature to the roar of the falls and Marzell shot a slightly anxious glance behind him again. Where was Dresna? She'd been following along only moments before...
Marzell narrowed his eyes and turned back to the falls, his mind racing at how the events had turned out so far. Dresna had only grudgingly agreed to accompany him because he'd promised to take her to the "secret" he'd told her about earlier before they'd been interrupted by Kyren. In all honesty, he'd merely been bluffing, trying to impress his sister with his expansive knowledge of which he had very little of. By Iudex's will alone he'd somehow stumbled upon this wonderful spot. Flawless move, if he did say so himself. Marzell growled silently at the thought of his heir sister. That'd show her. Check mate.
As Marzell let his blue eyes roam his gaze fell on another wolf. By scent alone he knew her for a female. Her hunched frame was turned away from him and he moved forward quietly as to not startle her. What was she doing here? Curiosity prickled at Marzell's paws and he forgot about his lagging sister, instead striding further to get a good look at the female. Her coat was a dusty white and grey mix, reminding him faintly of Calliope. Softly, he spoke aloud. His voice had grown deeper as the weeks passed, however the young wolf still held the ringings of a tenor inside him.
"Hello?"
Pausing, Marzell stepped forward again, kneading the ground impatiently.
"Err, anyone home?"
Breaking a small grin, Marzell paraded towards the female, his jet black pelt sprinkled slightly darker from the fall's watery flecks.
ooc- rough. he'd harder for me for some reason. ^^;

Amulet’s head snapped up and she jumped up in surprise when she heard the other wolf greet her. She turned to look at him and was instantly reminded of Jay. This wolf had the same black pelt as her lover had, but was speckled darker with the spray from the waterfall. She dipped her head to him but said nothing.
She didn’t raise her gaze to his, not really knowing what to do. She hadn’t been around another wolf for some time now. The friends she once had, had left her. She pricked her ears as he came over to stand next to her and she shied away a bit, unsure of what his intentions were. He seemed friendly enough, but she wouldn’t truly be comforted by his presence until she knew for sure that he didn’t mean her any harm.
Err, anyone home?
Came his voice again and she looked up at him, her eyes glowing with the sorrow of her past. Part of her wanted to growl at him and force him away from her, but the other half wanted him to stay for he so very much looked like Jay. She said, very softly, “Hello. May I have the pleasure of knowing your name?” She was trying to be polite even though her body was tense and her ears pricked, alert. She wasn’t going to let down her guard until she knew he was safe to be around and that wouldn’t be for some time now.
She thought again of a time Jay and her had been here together. He had been romping in the water, the spray getting all over Amulet and he had declared that he was in love with, her and she told him that she loved him too. From that day on nothing had ever been the same between them. Jay was more protective then ever of her and she of him. But in the end Jay had died because he was protecting her and Amulet would never forgive herself. But what she never told him was that he had a daughter and a son, whom she had sent away when they were less then a day old. She never knew if they lived but she now wanted to tell him even though she never would because he was gone now. Now it was too late to tell him and she wanted to cry because of it.

MARZELL The female's reaction was one mixed signal at best. At his first approach she shied away, eyes averted and her head down. Marzell quirked a brow, stopping short of where he'd meant to be. Surely she didn't think he'd hurt her? But as soon as he opened his mouth to reassure her of his innocent intentions her face flickered a strange, solemn recognition. She gazed at him for moments, her eyes flickering with some untold emotion.
Marzell was dumbfounded. Softly, quietly she spoke and he inched his muzzle as close as he dared to hear her.
“Hello. May I have the pleasure of knowing your name?”
Well, that was easy enough! Marzell smiled gently as he responded. Obviously she didn't think of him in a good light. Maybe it was the black coat. Black was a darker color, suspicious in some forms. That had to be it. Hm. If so, he'd just have to prove her wrong. Minding his manners and his staring, Marzell responded gently, watching his dictation as he spoke. Still, he remained bouncy and outgoing as he slowly lost concentration on the matter at hand. Hopefull she would forgive him; he was still young and he had time to learn the virtue of patience.
"Marzell. I belong to the Irrsin pack. I'm the Alpha's son."
Boldly he puffed out his chest, strutting forward to stand before the falls. His claws were touching the water, half submerged in the chilled liquid and his ears flipped eagerly at all the sights and sounds of the falls. The humming of the pounding water, the chirp of a nearby bird. It all entranced him, teasing his senses. Something deeper stirred within the male however, and he turned to gaze back at the female.
She was a dusty brown and grey mix, her eyes soft in the morning light. From his observation so far, she seemed horribly tired. Her frame sank and her voice rang lighter than a dove's gentlest touch. Cautiously, Marzell padded back to her, his eyes searching hers.
"What's your name, m'lady?'
It was a line he'd picked up from Zy, naturally. The brute was constantly teaching him how to woo the ladies, how to stun them into attracted silence. He'd given him lines, looks to mimic, moves to use. None of them would have been accepted or ordained by his mother or father by any means. Marzell had absorbed them readily nonetheless. Zy's ability to lure the vixens was legendary to the young male; he got the babes to swoon partially by sheer wit and partially by his dashing good looks. He was practically famous.
Marzell, when compared to Zy, would easily have his parent's looks to rely on, but he would try a twist on the older male's original satires. It was a daring attempt. Chivalry would be the sidekick, a smidgen of levity thrown in for good measure. Females always liked to feel they were being treated to the best; he knew from the way his mother acted in response to his father's sweet teases and playful gestures. Hopefully his small bits and pieces of training would turn out to be useful. Flashing his blue eyes, Marzell let his gaze run over her face. Pretty enough to harmlessly flirt with, that was for certain.

Amulet watched him as he puffed out his chest and walked into the water. For a moment he had stood there, his paws slightly submerged in the frigid, clear water. She looked at him when he asked for her name, and was surprised when he’d said m’lady. She titled her head to the side and gazed curiously at him. This was a strange wolf in front of her, obviously a young wolf. He had declared that he was of the Irrsin Pack, the Alpha’s son, called Marzell.
She dipped her head to him, feeling rude. He was the Alpha’s son then it was right for her to bow her head to him, wasn’t it? She sighed and spoke softly, but yet a little louder then she had been speaking before, “My name is Amulet, and I belong to no pack, I am just a Free Roamer.”
Her clear golden eyes rose ever so slightly to contact with his. She didn’t want to look at him, because it reminded her of her poor Jay. Now another memory came to mind, but it was one she wanted to forget. Jay’s death. The scene flashed before her and she backed away, her eyes wide with horror.
Jay was running beside her. Telling her to run, his black pelt brushing hers. His voice was telling her that if he didn’t make it through this that he wanted her to know that he would always love her. She felt that same shudder she had then, she heard her voice automatically say that she loved Jay too. She whipped around, facing the hunter. The bang filled the air and it was horror that flashed over her as she saw Jay’s body fall to the ground. They had never done anything, anything at all to that human. And yet he still saw it necessary to kill Jay when the black wolf was just trying to protect Amulet.
The memory ended softly after the bang, and Amulet was still backing up and was close to falling into the river. Instead she sat down and began to shake her head, “No, no, no!” she sniffed and tears began to slide down her muzzle. She couldn’t take it any longer, she didn’t care that Marzell would think she was odd, she didn’t care that she looked like a pup, no nothing mattered to her anymore.

MARZELL The female's pale eyes lowered at the mention of his rank, her body stance faltering. Had he said something wrong? Marzell whined softly, his paws kneading the ground in anxiety. He hadn't meant to offend her in any sense. Hastily and swiftly the male stepped back to further asses the damage. She was shaking a little, possibly the combining result of such cold weather and the waterfall's surrounding low temperature. Marzell considered moving over to huddle besides the female, but before he could move she spoke, her voice like velvet on the thin, winter air.
“My name is Amulet, and I belong to no pack, I am just a Free Roamer.”
Marzell nodded silently, sliding into his own thoughts as a strange quiet fell over the newly acquainted pair. Just a free roamer? She was lucky she wasn't a slave, with that mindset! The male tipped his head, mind buzzing. What would it be like to be a slave? It was obvious their life was harder than most; there had to be a reason they had been demoted to a title such as sklavin in the first place. But Calliope, Matrid, and Zy didn't seem to resent their positions in the pack in any way. In Marzell's young eyes they appeared just as happy and indulgent in life as the rest, telling ancient stories of Iudex and Eperna at night with his siblings, teaching small hunting moves through the boring, winter afternoons. He'd never seen his father or mother treat them any different, now that he considered it. They were his family. They were no different than the beta or alpha; only positions separated them. They were true wolves alike.
“No, no, no!”
Amulet's frenzied sobs broke into Marzell's troubled thoughts like a spark, making him jolt with a quick jump of his shoulders. What was wrong? Fear split through him and the young wolf gained his feet and cast his blue eyes around hastily for the source of danger; he would not be caught off guard so easily. Snarling, his fur rose and his lips raised. Anyone who had made a female whimper that loudly had to look rather ferocious. Battle ready, Marzell gazed around in waiting, his stance locked and muscles quivering with the blood rush.
It was to his ultimate surprise that no strange figures leaped from nearby bushes, no dark shadows fled through the tree line before bursting forward to snatch a pup for dinner. His mind dropped blank, his eyes dulling as he realized no one was around that had not been before. Immediately his eyes shot to Amulet, bewilderment and a sense of slipping anger boiling. He'd been genuinely scared for a moment, ready to take on whatever the world wanted to throw at him. Ready to test his skills, to prove himself. And now, nothing.
"What was that about? I thought someone had hurt you!"
In growing annoyance, Marzell strode forward to Amulet's side, throwing out a paw to make the female turn towards him. He'd missed the sadness in her facade, the speckled tears on the ground. He was blinded by the sheer ignorance of a young wolf. Ready for the world, yes. She-wolves, however, would take some getting used to.

i'm stuck in the past....
Amulet sighed at his reaction, he was growling and looking around for the danger that wasn't there. She whispered, "I'm sorry, but it's not that it's just a memory that haunts me. Well memories haunt me all the time, so I shouldn't be scaring others, I am deeply and utterly sorry Marzell." She dipped her head to him and whimpered softly. He had come to her side now and she nearly flinched away, being reminded of Jay once more. He looked so much like her, but then so different.
She looked away from him again and sighed, a big long breath that lingered in the air before them. She avoided his gaze and spoke again, "Again I am sorry Marzell." She hung her head, feeling rather depressed that she could have caused him to think that there was some danger and run off to find it. She suddenly wanted to blurt out everything to him, but instead she just stared to cry, the tears feeling cold as they ran down her face.
"I'm sorry Marzell, so sorry," she whispered and avoided his gaze, not wanting him to see her cry. She thought of the day she met Jay. She had been lost in the forest and couldn't find her way. Jay had found and taken her to his home, and she never returned to her own home because she fell in love with the charming one black one with a loving heart. She whimpered and looked up to meet Marzell's eyes.

MARZELL Beneath the flickering eyes, Marzell watched the she-wolf as she stuttered about her words, catching the nervous twitching of her body. She looked cold. It occurred to him to scoot closer, maybe help her stop shivering, but he remained frozen to the spot, his paws heavy with a lingering doubt. The way she gazed about herself was strange, different, completely unknown to him. He continued to hold his silence as she spoke, narrowing his eyes to catch her flinch from him, the universal motion of distrust and offense.
"I'm sorry, but it's not that it's just a memory that haunts me. Well memories haunt me all the time, so I shouldn't be scaring others, I am deeply and utterly sorry Marzell."
Again the female shivered, her fur short and spiky in the waterfall's reach and Marzell cringed. He barely knew her and yet to see her fluttering like a ground-readied autumn leaf was too much. Zy had always taught him that the lady's needs came first. Here goes nothing. In one motion he quickly moved to sit beside her, his breath heavy in anticipation of what she would say. Their fur was brushing, swaying under the chills of the wind and a blush crossed the male's face as Amulet spoke again.
"Again I am sorry Marzell."
Her apologies were soft and crooked at in the same moment, cracked and flawed. She'd done nothing wrong. Why was she apologizing so much? Marzell ignored her frenetic atonement with a shake of his head, the eyes sparkling. When he went to look her in the eyes, however, her head was bowed, the tension rippling up her spine and spreading through Marzell's own body faster than he could knowingly process. Before he knew it, muffled snuffs echoed in the air and her body shook next to him. His brows furrowed in confusion and he opened his mouth to inquire further before shutting it. Maybe she needed to let this out. As the time elapsed into a lingering, mimicking calm, her voice hit the air again, whispered and sorrowful.
"I'm sorry Marzell, so sorry,"
The voice was lyrical and sweet, humming sweet afflictions in the male's ear. As if a bothersome fly was bothering him, Marzell flicked his ears in disregard, sympathy lurking in his gaze as she turned to face him. And then, in the frustration of it all, Marzell let his anger loose, the blue eyes hard and forceful as they stared at his companion.
"Hush. I don't want to hear you apologize again."
It was instinctive, his response, his flaring anger, the piercing eyes. She had done nothing wrong. There was no need for her to give him retribution for a mistake she had not committed. Nudging Amulet in a way that was meant to be consoling, the male let his voice fall quiet. He didn't need to be angry with her. Just forceful. Obviously something was bothering her. Carefully, Marzell nuzzled the female's side, the small stirrings of affection brewing inside as he did so. The voice that asked of her was delicate, fragile, careful with word dictation and harshness. Completely unlike Kasimira's son.
"What's gotten you so upset, Amulet? I'm here to listen."
He considered himself for a moment before adding to what he'd said.
"I mean, if you don't want to, I respect that as well. You just seem so upset."
The blue eyes searched the female's face hastily, trying to figure her temperament, her reaction. Maybe she wouldn't have anything to do with him. Fear prickled at his belly and the male unknowingly held his breath, the anxieties tied like knots inside his fluttering chest. Trust me.

i'm stuck in the past....
Amulet carefully looked up at him and winced at the forcfulness and anger in his voice when he said, "Hush. I don't want to hear you apologize again." She opened her mouth to speak, to tell him that she had to apologize, because it was the only things she really knew. Then she felt him nuzzle her side, as though reassuring her that he hadn't meant to be angry with her. She shut her mouth and flicked her ear as a snowflake landed softly on it, it's touch instantly burning her ear from cold.
When his next words caressed the gentle silence she looked up at him and smiled slightly when he asked what had gotten her so upset. She whispered into the space that hovered between them, "My lover, Jay he died saving me and his memory haunts me with everything I do and say. I cannot hunt for memories of him flicker across my vision and I loose the prey. I cannot sleep for his face haunts my dreams, those last moments kill my need to rest. I can only wish that it was me and not him that was shot that dreadful day." She looked up at Marzell, "Oh Marzell, I don't know what to do anymore."
She caught his blue eyes as he searched her face and she smiled, just a small curve of her lips. Her eyes were still filled with sorrow though. Her voice could be compared to a soft ballad of a dove when she spoke again, her spoken words caring sorrow and pain, "We hadn't done anything wrong, Jay and I, we had just walked through his farm. We weren't bothering anything. Then he had to come and shoot poor Jay who would never hurt any creature without having a reason, a good reason at that. A very good reason. He would always wish the prey's spirit a good return to the earth, he didn't deserve to die like that."
