CÚTHAIL
I see, can't have you, can't leave you, there 'cause I must sometimes see you And I don't understand how you can keep me in chains Cúthail froze as she not only followed him, but allowed rage to rip across her face. At him? No, at her mate for not approving. That was something, at least? At her comforting and pleading words, she forced her body to relax and she sat down with her tail wrapping around her broad, thickly furred body, and he forced his heaving sides to slow. Soon, his breath was back under control and he made himself sit back down, though his silver eyes were still wide with fear; made to look like silvery steel under the fierce reflections of the snow that coated the area outside this little hollow.
A soft humorless chuckle fell from his lips as he took in her form once more. Why is it that the only female in the history of females who was nice to me, and not my mother or sister, has a mate and is the Queen? The question wasn't really seeking a reply, just stating facts. He didn't even mean that he wanted after her, was just questioning the humor of the Fates. Did they find it funny to do such things to him? They must, for they had always, even in the happy days of his youth- surrounded by parents and siblings and music. It had been so long since he had sung, or heard music, and even longer since he had sung of joy. Even then the Fates had sought to harm him, causing his siblings to tease him more so than the others, and his disposition had always been one of shyness and preference for solitude to the teasing gazes of surer wolves.
I will take you on your word, and stay. But I would prefer no one dies on my name, if you don't mind. Cúthail's smile was soft and weak, eyes still wide with cautious alertness. As for your mate, I s'pose it is on your name if you anger him or not, and so long as he will not seek to finish what another started, I will stay. He gestured once again to his throat, then let the topic go.[/blockquote]

Elektra watched as the male made his decision, sitting back down. His eyes still showed fear, but he seemed okay. She glanced down at her paws, staring at a small pebble. She seemed to be scaring him more than anything. Maybe it would be best to leave, before she frightened him out of his wits. What else could she spring on him? Her shoulders rolled, stretching out as she thought. There wasn't much more for her to tell him that would surprise him.
The chuckle coming from his maw made her look up. His words made her brows furrow. Why was that? What drew her to him so completely? It confused her, bewildered her, and she watched him carefully. She felt no need to reply to the statement. There was nothing she could say that could change anything. The fae looked down once more, seeming to study the ground below her. There was nothing to do about the situation, and she felt sorrow at the fact that this meeting had hurt him more than it had affected her. She didn't like causing others pain, and she had wrenched up horrible memories that had reduced him to near tears. She was no good at this. Elektra should just quit now. She sighed softly, ears drooping slightly. What was going on with her?
She looked up once again, listening to him. His smile was weak and half-hearted, but it was there, and she answered it as best as she could. She waited for him to finish, noticing the motion to his throat. His statement caused her eyes to narrow. "That's not gonna happen." She composed herself, raising her head and glancing around the little wooded area around them. "Stolz is free to think as he wishes, but he will not change my actions nor will he control who I talk to." She turned to him and gave him a sad smile. "But enough of him. Out of sight, out of mind, I always say. What brought you up here on this strange night?" Strange indeed. But it was pleasant, and she was not going to let her other emotions destroy their current peace. She forced her head to stay raised, watching him with a cautious expression.

CÚTHAIL
I see, can't have you, can't leave you, there 'cause I must sometimes see you And I don't understand how you can keep me in chains Cúthail felt his smile growing just barely, barely warmer, barely more sincere. But still. It was something, and it needed to quit right there, before he got feelings. Feelings for the Queen, whose mate was the King, for heavens sake. Damn heart.. Just because something is kind, and female, does NOT mean you get to go all weak and wussy on me. She is not for you, so get over it. It's a nice chat, then time to move on, and that is that. Deal with it. He reprimanded himself ferociously, all the while his face was smooth and sincere, though his eyes showed the war raging within, so he kept his gaze carefully down. Well, to be honest I just wanted to see the sunset. I am a loner, so I often wander about, and this is one of my favorite haunts. And if company, friendly company, is a part of that- I'm glad I decided to come up here tonight. Though I better not let myself get to used to your kindness, He joked lightly, though a serious tone edged his words. It was true. If he got used to her warmth and friendly words, it would be all the harder when it came time to move on from this place. That is why, as a loner, he had allowed himself to make connections and affections to none but the earth and magnificent views that this countryside so willingly offered.[/blockquote]

She watched Cúthail's smile growing, and how he looked down quickly, but not before she saw the war raging in his eyes. Her brows furrowed in concern. What was wrong now? What in the hell was she doing wrong that hurt him so much? She couldn't find the answers to her questions, and it pained her to accept that fact.
She listened to his speech carefully, nodding as he went on. His last sentence made her stomach twist. It was true. She could not stay here forever, she could not remain with this kind stranger who told her his secrets when no one else would listen. He understood it, and she needed to as well. Despite the lack of anger in his words, it still felt like a slap in the face. He did not plan on seeing her again. She looked down, watching the dirt change under the moonlight. She attempted to keep her voice calm as she responded to him quietly. "I'm glad I came up here tonight. It's pleasant to know at least one wolf in this god forsaken land has a heart. You've made my coming here a kind one, and I thank you for it." As she spoke, her head stayed down, but her eyes flashed up, searching his face, her ears pricked. She had no way of knowing how he would respond. For the first time since coming here, she was laying her cards on the table. She was opening up, becoming vulnerable. Would he take advantage of it, and kick her while she was down? He didn't seem the type, but then again, who did? Trust was a touchy thing, something she did way too much. There was too much evil in the world to trust. Her eyes turned back to the ground, a sight parting her lips. So much evil.

CÚTHAILI see, can't have you, can't leave you, there 'cause I must sometimes see you And I don't understand how you can keep me in chains
At long last, Cúthail let his eyes lock onto Elektra; let her see the emotions waging such a vicious war in his gut and heart. The longing for her kindness, her warmth, her friendship. Her beauty, and the bright intelligence he sensed laid within, that he now saw to sparkle in her eyes in the sharp contrasting world that the night, moon, and snow made together. In this world, anything was possible. But.. Not what he wanted. A cautious tenderness in his eyes, a draw to the strength of her personality. After such a short time, the gut-wrenching flutterings shouldn't be possible. Not to the Queen. Not to a mated wolfess. Should he lay himself out for her, or hide these strange beginnings of feelings?
The gentle hearted brute decided on a middle road. I thank you for much the same, kind Elektra. But I'm afraid if I stay, I will cause more harm then good. You have a country, and a mate, to tend. I may keep this night, as a memory that kindness does exist, and that maybe all is not lost for me. I will keep it to nurse the hurting heart I so fear will come from leaving this place, from leaving you. Cautiously, ever so delicately, he stepped forward- moving so slow she could easily see his plan and evade it if she wished, and he pressed his mud brown and tan muzzle to her sandy cheek, licking her gently, then turned to leave. Pain rushed through him at the sensation of turning his back on the only female who had ever given him hope for a love, but he could not bring himself to press her for more than she'd already given him. Slowly, ever so slowly, he walked out of the indent of the earth and out into the cold snow. In that cave of sorts, their bodies had created the only shared body heat he had ever known in his life, and would likely ever know again. The warmth and beauty of it had caused him to forget the harsh reality of the snow, instead letting him see the dreamlike fog of moon and stars and night and snow. Now, the cold bit into his legs and melted against his thick fur, freezing up against the fur of his belly until millions of tiny icicles hung from his thick coat. His silver gaze rose to look at the moon, his entire being screaming at him to turn around and get down and beg her to give him a chance. To plead that he was worth it. But he wasn't.[/blockquote]

As Elektra looked up, his eyes locked onto hers. So many emotions floated in that gray expanse, longing and hope and an unknown decision. She couldn't bear to look away. She could get lost in those mercury eyes, so full of kindness and the hope that she desperately needed. His eyes changed then, and he began to speak. His words wrenched her gut. She knew he was leaving, but she refused to believe it. Her mind was soon focused elsewhere, eliminating the thought from her brain.
He began to move, slowly, towards her. She could easily read his face, read what he was going to do. No. Don't let him do it. You have a mate. You have a life. It's time to let him go.. Her mind urged her to step away, to back up and leave, but she couldn't find her legs, couldn't find the will to break him that way. He licked her cheek, then turned, walking. Her eyes followed him to the edge of the forest, and once his frame disappeared, she was in motion. But she was going the wrong way. Instead of going the other way, back towards her home, she was following Cúthail, easily sliding into a lope that caught up to him. Her mind was blank. Should she call out to him? Should she just follow? She had no idea what to do. A confused, bewildered expression on her face, she opened her maw. "Cúthail." She murmured. Elektra was too far away from him to hear it, and she grew angry with herself. This was wrong. But she couldn't let him leave. Why was this happening? Without another thought, she sped up, growing closer to him. "Cúthail! Don't leave!" As she grew closer, she slowed. What in the hell was wrong with her? "Please."

Cúthail's heart leaped as he heard her voice- she had followed him! Then sorrow overtook him as he once again realized what he had to do. Heart heavy, he turned in a slow circle to face her. Elektra. So, so beautiful... If only, if only..
Elektra... We can't do this. You have a mate, the kingdom. I am nothing... To no one, especially not you. This is hard for me, believe me, but it won't work. I could never make you happy, don't you see? With every sound and word he uttered, a deep longing filled his eyes, and his heart broke at every point his treacherous mind made and voiced. Why couldn't he just let it go, give in? She had followed him- the first to ever do such a thing. She so clearly believed in this, in them, yet he saw the confusion in her eyes. She couldn't abandon her country, not for a rogue.
If I stay, it'll only hurt me to see you with him. Call me selfish, but I can't deal with that. I'm sorry, Elektra. Then he slowly trudged off through the snow again, even slower then before. His traitorous heart burned with the hope that she'd yet again follow, that she'd say she didn't care. That she'd stay with him, and him only. That she would have a way to make it work. But his mind knew better, and so it forced his paws to keep moving, one sludging step after another.

As he turned to face her again, Elektra's heart broke when she saw the sorrow etched in his handsome features. She was hurting him, doing this. It was wrong. Why couldn't she let him alone? As he began to speak, her heart began to sink. He was right. Things would not work. She had been chosen for a role that could not be fulfilled with Cúthail.
As he began to walk away again, her maw opened. "Please, Cúthail. I don't want.. you to leave." She didn't move. She had lost all control of her body, not knowing how to breathe, how to blink, or how to move. A whispered please... fell from her lips as she gave up. Her legs gave out and her butt hit the ground, her front legs barely keeping her up. Her head bowed, black nose nearly buried in the dirt. Her mind was spinning violently, and she gave a soft whine. It was painful to think, painful to try and move. She didn't try. Elektra calmed her mind, taking slow, deep breaths as she fought for her control. But it didn't come. His rejection had defeated her, and she no longer knew what to do. What is wrong with you?! You don't KNOW him. He's a stranger. Go home, to your pack, to your mate. This is stupid. Her legs trembled at the thought of returning to her home. Stolz was there. So were here subjects, her packmates, and her land. Would she give it up? Her very being shuddered away from the thought. What would happen, then? A part of her hoped Cúthail would keep walking. It would be for the best of both of them. But her darker, more selfish side wanted him to stay. It would hurt them both, but she didn't care.

Cúthail's mind screamed at him not to look back, not to respond. He needed to keep walking- if he looked back, he would walk the wrong path, he knew it, with his entire heart and being. But he couldn't ignore those words, that plea. With a soft sigh of resignation he turned, and his heart broke all over to see her immobilized in such a way. For him. It wasn't possible, shouldn't be happening! Yet it was, and he couldn't deny her of what he knew she needed, wanted even, though maybe not one hundred percent.
Softly he padded back to her and pressed his muzzle into her soft throat, her body radiating irresistible heat. The male let his side edge closer to her's, until their bodies were pressed together, their sorrows shared. Is this truly what you want, Elektra? I'll stay for you, but I need to know that you won't throw me away. He whispered, trying to beat some common sense into both of them, while his heart cried for him to shut up and take whatever she dished, for however long she gave it. It would be worth all the pain such a bond would surely bring, probably in the near future. Tell me what you want, sweetheart. I can stay, as your friend, if you want. It will hurt me, but I can do it. I can be your secret, if you wish to hide me from your mate and kingdom. I can take you with me, though I doubt your willingness to abandon your country so soon after gaining it. Tell me what you want, and I will get it for you, use my every ability to be it for you, I swear.
He knew it was stupid, he knew he'd pay. And he couldn't have cared less, not in that moment, not with her furred side against his, her heated skin so close, her scent filling his senses with it's feral wondrousness. For you, the world.

She didn't know he had turned, he was coming back to her, until his muzzle gently pressed against her throat. Her eyes glanced up, wide with shock and hope. As the words tumbled from his maw, his body slowly pressing up against her, Elektra only knew him. She didn't care for anything else, she couldn't even register his words. He had stayed, and that's what mattered. Everything would be okay.
But that feeling soon wore off. Images of her kingdom, her mate, flashed in her eyes, and she softly cringed. This wasn't right. She knew if she forced this male to stay, he would be hurt, possibly beyond repair. He seemed to understand that, but could she do it? Could she be selfish and stay with him, knowing he would be hurt? Before she could decide, her mouth opened and she began to speak. "Cúthail, I want you to stay with me. Stolz can not find out, nor can anyone else. But.. I want you to stay with me." Her lips faltered at the end. She didn't know what she wanted, yet she couldn't bear to let him leave. He was kind, he was here, and she wanted him to stay, for as long as they both could bear it. Her mind refused to believe how he would be hurt. Everything would be okay.
