MATRID
*
He was turned away from her when he answered, and she was almost glad for it. She was close enough that if she wanted to, she would have been able to see his expression. But no. She kept her eyes straight ahead, trying to steel herself when he began to talk. Someone, she knew she would need to.
Before he did, she caught the scent of Calliope and Zy. She edged forward a little, a happy expression on her face. They'd finally found them. Now, they just had to reach the pair. Should be easy.
“Do you really not know, or do you know but hope I’ll say something different than your expectations. I told you earlier that no one can know what really happened. I will continue to demand respect of the sklavins. I won’t tolerate Zy’s mouthing off. I will do what the lady wishes until it is time for me to leave. I desire to prove I am above a sklavin and so I will form no close attachments.”
His last words whiped the happy expression off of her face, but she forced herself not to cringe. She made her legs keep moving at the same pace, and worked on keeping her expression blank as he continued to speak. The things he spoke of, hunting together, changes in her body language, they offered a bucket of comfort in a sea of confusion. But a bucket was better than no bucket, wasn't it?
He instructed her to say no more, and she wouldn't have known what to say anyways. But suddenly Calliope was there, and Matrid found her spirits rising just a little. They had found her, and she didn't look injured, just out of breath. She realized then how much she really did like Calliope. Was it a thing, getting attached on a friendly level with her? Kyren's words made her think it through, but then she decided she didn't care. She was tired of always keeping to herself, and Calliope seemed to like her as well. Why not return the friendly feelings?
Kyren stopped, ignoring Matrid now, but Matrid continued forward until she was a little closer to Calliope. "Have you seen Zy? I can't find him anywhere. I wanted him to be there to greet Lady Kasimira, but I can't find him anywhere and now I'm so late and--" Before Matrid could answer to reassure Calliope somehow, Kyren was talking and he seemed to be calculating how they would find Zy. Good, one of them had to be able to think rationally. And although Matrid could get her brain working if she really wanted to, Kyren seemed better suited for the job, more rational.
"Is Lady Kasimira angry with me?"
Calliope's gaze met Matrid's, and Matrid felt a pang of sympathy for her. She offered a small smile as Kyren spoke with words icy and cold. She knew she didn't need to make an attempt to soften the situation; Kyren was right, Kasimira was fairly disappointed. But she knew she would have wanted someone to reassure her, as much as she didn't like to admit it to herself.
She edged her body forward more until she was almost at she-wolf's side, making sure to keep a small bit of distance for Calliope's sake. Her bushy tail swayed back and forth just slightly, her posture somehow a mixture between excitement at finding Calliope and sureness that things would all work out. Her ears flickered, her nose twitching as she inhaled both the scents of the two wolves near her and the older one of Zy leading off in the other direction. Would they follow it?
"She's disappointed." Matrid agreed, but her voice was softer than Kyren's had been, more understanding and comforting. "But if you explain to her that you'd gone looking for Zy, perhaps she'll be a little more understanding."
Matrid wasn't sure how true these words were. Would Kasimira understand? For Calliope's sake, Matrid hoped she would. It didn't seem like Calliope had been up to anything aside from what she said she'd been doing, which was looking for Zy. For a moment, Matrid found herself feeling a bit bad for ever thinking that Calliope would have fled from Irrsin.

Calliope Calliope blinked as Kyren launched into a long-winded answer to her question. She was beginning to wonder if maybe his brain only worked when his mouth was running. It seemed he always voiced the thought process that happened silently for most wolves. However, in this instance she was glad for it. She knew exactly what he was thinking and how dangerously close he was to uncovering her lie. Zy's scent trail would be the incriminating evidence that brought her down.
"She's disappointed."
Calliope wasn't the only one lying at the moment. Though she appreciated Matrid's kindness, there wasn't any use sugarcoating it. Kyren obviously thought so as well, with his blunt reproach. Kasimira noticed her absence, then, and had sent these two out to find Calliope and Zy. If she was already sending out a search party, it didn't bode well for Cal. And add lying to the mix? Kasimira would kill her on the spot. The situation had now become as much about self-preservation as it was about protecting Zy.
"I lost his scent at the stream." This was mostly true, but she left out the part where she guessed that Zy had crossed it and turned out to be right. If Kyren and Matrid guessed the same, and they probably would, they would think her stupid for missing it. But Calliope would rather be thought silly for making a mistake than a traitor for protecting a runaway. "If he followed the stream, there's no telling which way he went. At least there are two of you, so you can search both directions."
It was then that Calliope noticed how close the two were standing. Her mind drifted back to when she first spotted them. They had been conversing intently, interacting on a much more intimate level than before. Not that it meant anything, but Matrid and Kyren had been strangers when she left them. Calliope could definitely see herself being good friends with Matrid, Kyren seemed like a hard wolf to get close too. Suddenly Calliope felt a bit like an intruder, though Kyren always made her feel small.
"Should I help you search?" she ventured gently, "or does the lady want me back at the dens?"

I used up all of my tricks
Ky found himself wishing they hadn’t found Calliope, and fighting with himself so that he buried that feeling. Here was Calliope and she seemed a bit less nervous now, but she wasn’t off running with Zy. She had been following his trail. To find him and bring him back? Ky stayed quiet for a short time after she spoke, just watching her thoughtfully, head cocked to one side. This could clear his mind up, looking at a puzzle instead of wondering about feelings. It was likely Zy had heard the call, though he imagined not impossible he missed it, just close to impossible. Frustrating as it was there was no way to determine what she was doing, whether it was fetching Zy or planning to run off with Zy.
Matrid was trying to find gentler ways of saying the lady might be upset. Kyren just shook his head slightly feeling it was rather pointless. Why give false hopes? Had she wanted a false hope about how things would work out? Did she want a lie? Do most females prefer to be lied to instead of hearing the truth if it’s painful?
I hope that you like this, but you probably won't
Kyren turned his head back in the direction of the den and then back to Calliope. “Go back to the den, go see the lady. Let her know that Matrid and I are still searching for Zy. If she’d rather us come back now she has but to call.” I wonder where that sklavin is going.
That would leave Matrid and him alone again. Funny, before he’d regretted losing time alone with her, now he felt hesitant towards being alone with her. Dealing with Calliope, making decisions and tossing out orders is what he felt comfortable with, what he was meant to do. He sure as hell didn’t want Zy to see them being friendly. Why was Zy going so far out? Was this really hunting or was he running? It wasn’t necessary to go this far out for food. Ky did remember the wolf had been angry when he left, so running off a ways was likely but was it this far?
you think you're cooler than me
Was he just hoping Zy was running? That would be a wonderful situation no matter what happened. If he was caught running he’d get to see how exactly the lady liked dealing with punishing for that offense. If he got away Ky wouldn’t have to deal with him, of course that would damage Kyren’s pride. If Ky had to stop him, have to attack him to make him return… That thought sent a tingle of pleasure rippling down his spine, a small assured smile flicking across his muzzle.
Kyren walked a few steps away from the two females, in the direction Zy’s scent would be taking them before stopping and turning around to see if they both accepted what he’d said. It did make sense, and seemed to be the best form of following Kas’ orders. He couldn’t send Matrid with Calliope as Kas had made it very obvious that Matrid was along to make sure Kyren didn’t decide to rip out Zy’s throat. Kyren wasn’t going back because he just didn’t see Matrid wanting to deal with this, have the confidence to do this, on her own. Calliope getting back would also let her know they were making progress.
“Matrid, lets go. The longer we wait the more distance Zy might be covering.” Kyren was sure to say those words to Matrid with no sign of emotion.

MATRID
*
"I lost his scent at the stream. If he followed the stream, there's no telling which way he went. At least there are two of you, so you can search both directions."
Matrid nodded to her words, glad that they at least had an idea of where Zy was. Had he, unlike Calliope, fled? He seemed extremely far out to just be hunting, that much was obvious. Matrid turned her narrow face towards the direction of the stream, dark eyes assessing. Would she go with Kyren to search for him, or would he sent her back to the dens with Calliope, eager to be rid of her?
When Calliope asked if she should help or return to the dens, Matrid was silent, knowing that it would be best to let Kyren decide. He did. “Go back to the den, go see the lady. Let her know that Matrid and I are still searching for Zy. If she’d rather us come back now she has but to call.”
Well, that answered her question. She nodded, keeping her eyes on Calliope. "Thank you, Calliope. You've definitely been helpful." This was spoken with warmness, followed by a smile to show that she was serious, no sarcastic tint to her words. It was a relief, running into Calliope. Matrid didn't feel nearly as down now, and it showed in her posture and her eyes. She knew soon she'd be alone with Kyren then, but she pushed the thought away. He didn't seem very happy about the idea, anyways.
“Matrid, lets go. The longer we wait the more distance Zy might be covering.”
She glanced at Kyren, forcing herself not to react to his emotionless tone. "Right." She replied, working to keep her voice as careless as his. Shaking her head a little, she gave Calliope a regretful glance and a small nod. Then, she angled her body towards the stream, following after Kyren. As she moved further away from Calliope, her posture drooped slightly, her tail kept low and her ears at half-mast. She didn't walk nearly as close to him now, and not directly at his side. She had a feeling he wouldn't have wanted her to in the first place.
Well what did you expect? Her mind snipped at her, and Matrid's ears gave an irritated flick. What had she expected? Friendship? Well she should have known better than that. Perhaps friendship was possible with a fellow Sklavin like Calliope. But with Kyren, who'd had no intentions of becoming a sklavin and no intentions of staying one, did she really think she'd been...worthy?
Well, if he wanted her to keep her distance, she supposed she would. Silence washed over her as she trotted a few inches behind him, tail swaying stiffly. She could definitely say that she hoped they found Zy soon. Sure, it would mean Kyren and Zy bickering like an old mated couple, but it would also mean she would have a purpose - keeping them away from each other's throats. At the current moment, she was feeling quite...useless.
She sighed softly to herself, feeling a bit worse the further away they moved. She hoped that they arrived at the stream soon, hoped that she would be able to go one way by herself for a little while. But at the same time...Matrid was almost positive that she was scared of being alone. The last time she had been was on her trek from Auktion rock to Irrsin, and that had been a bit upsetting for her. She had been relieved when she had first stumbled upon Calliope and Zy, albeit rather nervous. Did she truly wish to have time by herself?
Moreso, the question was, would being by herself be better than this?
"Will we be splitting up once we reach the stream?" She asked, voice delicate and brittle.

Calliope A small breath of relief escaped Calliope's lungs, surprising her. The fae hadn't even noticed that she stopped breathing, holding in air as if movement would alert them to her lies. If Kyren was suspicious of her, he didn't question her. Maybe his mind had already moved on to strategy and how best to flush out a wolf. Or maybe he was thinking of a certain tawny femme. Before she dismissed the idea for lack of any real evidence, she felt a slight pang in her chest. What would it be like to know there was someone who always had you on his mind?
"Go back to the den, go see the lady."
"Right, of course." Cal's words were distracted, her mind a bit stunned at being pulled out of one thought too quickly. "I'll head there right away." Her paws were already taking her slight body over the land when Matrid's voice stopped her.
"Thank you, Calliope. You've definitely been helpful."
She took in the warm tone and sweet smile, trying to remember the last time she had encountered a wolf as genuine as the female before her. It made the weight of guilt drag on Calliope's heart. How could she lie in front of someone so true? "You're welcome. I hope . . ." The words stuck in her throat as the guilt squeezed. "I hope you find him quickly." Her smile felt weak compared to the one Matrid had given her.
Bobbing her head in a farewell nod to the pair, Calliope headed away quickly. At about a hundred yards away, she stopped and turned her head to watch them walk in the other direction. A sudden urge to follow them overcame her, stemming from both her desire to know if they would actually find Zy's tail and her curiosity about the nature of their relationship. One look at the open plains below her put an end to that thought; she would be discovered in an instant. Instead, she looked resolutely forward and willed her limbs to move, to carry her back to her mistress. Ooc- In case it wasn't obvious, you can keep RPing without me now. I'll probably post with Kasi and Tortuga.

I used up all of my tricks
Kyren trotted along in a state of silence that stemmed not just from his lack of talk, but in every stride, in every flick of an ear or tail, something about him spoke of an absence, so that while there was a physical presence near Matrid there seemed to be no living wolf. Troubled thoughts, deeper questions plagued at Kyren. Any one of the questions deserved deep thought, multiple questions seemed overpowering. Desiring to be a great alpha meant he could not simply decide a problem was too hard to solve and wait for later to deal with it. Nor could he try to pass the problem onto someone else.
Thoughts clashed with emotions, at points causing a snarl to cross his face, at others ears flicking back in frustration. Feelings for Matrid, no, feelings about the sklavin named Matrid got in his way of more important thoughts. He had sworn loyalty to this alpha female and he couldn’t stay here! Except he couldn’t break his word. Thoughts of how he couldn’t stay around this female that he had feelings…that he didn’t dislike. Staying near her was only going to be a burden on him, and for that matter on Matrid, the sklavin, as well. Even now he knew she was uncomfortable with him.
She wasn’t supposed to be the main problem! The lady had a mate now. Just one more wolf he’d have to listen too. Kyren had been so sure of his claimed right to be an alpha and he still believed in it, he was just starting to question his wisdom. Then he questioned himself for questioning himself. Oh, this was confusing. An alpha that was caring about a sklavin? To care about one was to admit that not all sklavins were as pathetic as he labeled sklavins. A more dangerous path was to acknowledge he was currently classified as a sklavin, and he of course was not truly a sklavin! If he wasn’t a sklavin but had the title of one, didn’t that mean that other wolves….no! This was a one time problem with the system. Of course…Matrid… Matrid was a born sklavin! Of course she deserved nothing better! Still…
"Will we be splitting up once we reach the stream?"
I hope that you like this, but you probably won't
Kyren jerked his head up, feeling a bit embarrassed and thus irritated at how her voice had been enough to surprise him. He wasn’t acting like himself at all. Good thing the other wolves didn’t know him that well yet. Then again it could be bad that he was making such a pathetic showing of himself? Kyren sighed and pushed down his thoughts. Logic said yes they would split up. “No, stay with me. We have to learn how to work together, you and I.” This was not the smartest course of action. Though actually, it rather depended on what his goal was, now didn’t it?
“I originally told you to stay to my left since that was where I was blind, change that to my right. I want to see you, I want you to work out a system with me made up of small movements and soft sounds if I need to know about danger coming, about what type, as many details as we can work out.” Kyren moved to a walk, slowing himself down as he focused his thoughts on what he was saying, and feeling a little tension eased just in finding one thing to focus on for a bit. “I want to make sure that the cue’s we make are both sound and movements so that if one method is cut off the other can be used.” His words were growing softer with each sentence, his mind too busy deciding what would work best to worry about image of the moment. They were alone, and the disturbing thought he’d have later was that he felt safe enough not to focus on his image. Kyren was, unthinkingly, trusting a sklavin. “I believe the tail will work best for precise communicating, you agree? It would be easy to make the signs most subtle, with practice we should be able to make it so I notice the smallest twitch, a flick of the barest tip to the base, to right or to left or perhaps in succession, I think we can work something out.” A decision was being made, subconsciously as he rearranged his thoughts. Ky stopped walking for a moment. “Matrid, we are out here to find Zy, and that is what we will do. However this is also a chance for us to get to work on this now, alone.” Hopefully Zy isn't too close.[/color] “So we can practice on this until we close in on him.” His good eye turned to face her directly now, “If you are willing to. I see little gain for you from this, the only reason for you to learn signaling is to help me. So, Matrid who are you? Will you help me for no gain of your own? I’ve told you my beliefs and desires, what are yours? I cannot even offer to acknowledge you among the other wolves.”
you think you're coller than me
Is it wrong to hide feelings? If I care for her, wrong as it is, should I not show it? I claim to be proud of who I am and what I will become, so why would I hide some of myself now? Perhaps because I do not care to acknowledge this part and plan to be done with it! Yes…I’m doing a fine job of that aren’t I? Acknowledging a sklavin?? Clenching his eyes shut, a snarl started to form on his lips, ears flattening and the fur on his back started to bristle. Kyren shook his head realizing it might upset Matrid, “I’m…sorry” I’m what? Got an explanation that doesn’t sound pathetic? Fights are so much easier than thinking things through like this and right now a fight sounds extremely good. “I’m not angry at you, just frustrated at the situation.”
Kyren seemed to acknowledge then that he’d stopped moving and picked up a slow walk. I will be an alpha, but not one who has to hide who they truly are. I challenge anyone that wants to tell me it is weak to care for a sklavin. I challenge any who want to say I am weak by being a sklavin. I will challenge anyone who disagrees with my beliefs! Apparently he had found his answer and it was one that pleased him. Now when he moved his steps again carried the pride he’d shown when they’d first met. Confidence danced within his eyes as he had faced his demons and with acceptance of them he felt there was nothing he could not handle. A smile started to form on his muzzle. “Matrid, everything’s going to be fine now. I know what to do, so please work with me.” The words were soft, spoken with confidence and even perhaps a bit of caring mingled in.
Words;; 1169 Muse;; Very Good Puppets;; Kyren for Matrid Notes;; lots of thoughts in this one. Who woulda imagined it coming out like this? Ky's changing

MATRID
*
For a while, Kyren looked lost in thought. Matrid took the time to give in to her own thoughts as well, body moving forward automatically. Why was it that she was so down now that Kyren was acting coldly towards her? Well that's obvious. Her thoughts scoffed at her. You care for the brute. Reflecting on this, Matrid realized that she did indeed care for Kyren, and it surprised the vixen. She hadn't thought she'd ever come to care for a male, not with her discomfort around them, but she had proven herself very wrong. He was different from the other sklavin's, unique even.
“No, stay with me. We have to learn how to work together, you and I.”
She felt a little pang of happiness brought on by his words, barely managing to keep the emotion out of her expression. When he continued, she listened closely, nodding her head when he spoke of her keeping to his right and cues. She found herself focusing intently on what he said, already finding him to be intelligent and headstrong. Normally she might have believed herself to be silly for listening to another sklavin like she was, but Kyren was no regular sklavin. He had potential to be more, that was made quite obvious already.
“I believe the tail will work best for precise communicating, you agree? It would be easy to make the signs most subtle, with practice we should be able to make it so I notice the smallest twitch, a flick of the barest tip to the base, to right or to left or perhaps in succession, I think we can work something out.”
She bobbed her head. "I agree with you completely. The tail would be the easiest way. There are so many ways we could set this up, though. Twitches, small wags, anything could be done."
She was thinking deeply now, imagining ways that she would be able to subtly communicate with Kyren.
She was puzzling over his question - if she would help him but received nothing in return - when he apologized, startling her. Her eyes widened slightly as she looked to him, her head tilting to one side. She had never expected an apology from him. In fact, she had expected him to perhaps take to ignoring her completely when they had finished their mission, maybe even during the mission. But here he was, admitting that he was stressed over the situation, not because of her. A small smile found it's way to her maw.
“Matrid, everything’s going to be fine now. I know what to do, so please work with me.”
Was that perhaps...something softer in his voice? The thought that Kyren might care for her as well shocked the she-wolf. Was it really possible, or had she just been mistaken? Shaking herself a little, she realized that she had been silent for a while. She suddenly stopped, letting Kyren get a little ahead of her before hurrying forward, moving to his right side. Her body was closer to his now as well, the smile on her muzzle having grown bigger. Everything about her posture reflected her happiness. She no longer tried to conceal it.
"Don't apologize. I understand your frustration. If I were in the same situation, I would be agitated as well." Her voice was low and soft, the feelings she felt for him a tad bit obvious in her words. "And you asked me if I would help you, although I would gain nothing from it. My answer to that would be yes. I'm willing to work something out so that I'd be able to alert you if need be. No matter the risk, nor the fact that I gain nothing. As long as it aides you."
She turned to look at him, her words as genuine as the look in her dark eyes. She knew that it was indeed a risk to help Kyren. A large one, at that. Depending on the circumstances, it could very well be punishable by death. She had no idea what his plans were, or what she was getting herself into by agreeing to this. But the thought didn't make her want to take back her words or change her mind. Instead, she felt pride in herself. Pride that she was finally doing something she wanted to do.
"Whatever you need me to do, simply tell me." Then, a grin shot in his direction following her next words. "You're the logical one, after all."

I used up all of my tricks
Kyren liked her, and he quit hiding that fact from himself. He turned his head again as they moved, looking her over but not in the harsh assessing way of one looking for flaws, more that he was noticing what he could like about her instead, the shade of her coat, the way she followed along beside him, all of the details he would have taken for granted. Amazingly, he realized he liked seeing her happier as well, showing joy instead of just trying to not be in his way. Kyren was far above the rank of sklavin and knew it. Perhaps this born-sklavin was worthy of more than being a sklavin as well, she just had to learn it. Things were starting to fall in place, unspoken questions being answered with that sense of just knowing what was right.
"And you asked me if I would help you, although I would gain nothing from it. My answer to that would be yes. I'm willing to work something out so that I'd be able to alert you if need be. No matter the risk, nor the fact that I gain nothing. As long as it aides you." "Whatever you need me to do, simply tell me." "You're the logical one, after all."
I hope that you like this, but you probably won't
Ky’s tail was wagging slowly, almost lazily back and forth as he listened to her. He shifted his gait so that he was still going forward and yet somehow ended up right next to Matrid, his fur dancing ever so delicately against the tips of her fur. For a moment he lowered his own head using it to nudge her chin up a bit higher as they ran, “keep your head up, be proud of yourself. You are not a sklavin, regardless of what title you carry, regardless of how you were born. Perhaps, we shall find that somewhere buried in you is a wolf even greater than the father who tossed you and trained you into this world of slavery.” A genuine smile offered to her before his focus again shifted ahead of them.
Kyren worked on the puzzle of what they had to work with. Tail was best, and could offer a lot of information, but also be able to signal one thing for him and yet still make sure to do nothing so obvious as to make another wolf mistake the cue’s for something else. “Let’s make the cue for danger relatively simple, perhaps this?” Kyren moved his tail into a position slightly left of his body and a bit lower than how she seemed to most often carry it, the tip of it flicking back and forth. “The end twitch can let me know that it’s not just how you’re positioning your tail but a defined move.” After this Ky went on, offering out different suggestions for key signals of those who were in the pack, to know if Zy, Calliope, Tortuga, or Kas were approaching. “Once we have those practiced out easily we can work on even more finesse and more cues.”
you think you're cooler than me
Ky’s mind raced thinking through all that had already happened here, what was said and done, “Matrid, have no fear, whenever I have the ladies permission to leave, I will make sure you are permitted to leave with me. When you are with me and I am alpha you will no longer be called a sklavin.” Hopefully that wouldn’t scare her. Sklavin’s only responsibility was to obey commands but once you accept a higher station you start to gain more responsibilities. Still, he was growing more confident with her the longer they travelled and the more he watched her.
There were of course many problems that he still didn’t have answers for, but so far what he’d figured out seemed right, a strong foundation to make the rest of his choices on. With a snort of amusement he paused to make sure they were still following Zy’s trail when he realized he’d actually forgotten to pay attention for a moment to the ladies goal. It was hard to be loyal to someone when you had your own plans to set into motion.

MATRID
*
Here they were, two sklavins, one born for this life and one never meant for it, on the trail of yet another sklavin. Matrid never would have thought she'd be enjoying tracking down a stray Sklavin, but here she was, happily trotting along. Then again, she was only happy because she was trotting along with Kyren, her fur occasionally brushing against his. She was happy to have him here, especially now that things were looking up and he wasn't ignoring her.
When he nudged her chin up, she was immensely glad for her thick fur, due to the fact that her skin flushed, forming a blush. “keep your head up, be proud of yourself. You are not a sklavin, regardless of what title you carry, regardless of how you were born. Perhaps, we shall find that somewhere buried in you is a wolf even greater than the father who tossed you and trained you into this world of slavery.”
Better than her father? Not a sklavin? His words swirled around in her head, making her reflect on them. Was it possible that if she really did look deep down inside that she would find a greater self? The she-wolf thought that sometime she would have to sit down and truly examine herself and her values, think over everything that had happened and who she was. Perhaps she could be better.
“Let’s make the cue for danger relatively simple, perhaps this?”
Her eyes flickered to his tail which was in movement, memorizing the way it moved. She tried it a few times with her own, as well as the other's that he showed her, committing their meanings to her memory. "Got it." She said with a small nod, her expression full of determination as she looked up at him.
“Matrid, have no fear, whenever I have the ladies permission to leave, I will make sure you are permitted to leave with me. When you are with me and I am alpha you will no longer be called a sklavin.”
She nearly lost her footing, stumbling a little to gain it back. These were perhaps the most surprising words he'd spoken, and she found herself falling into a pit of thoughts again. He would really take her with him? Not only would she no longer be chained to the life of slavery, but she would also be with Kyren. She had never dared let herself dream of freedom, but now she did. She found herself smiling again, her eyes flickering with happiness as she looked up at him.
"I'd love that. I really would." She said softly, her posture a little prouder now, her head held a bit higher. He brought out the best in her, she thought. Or taught her how to bring out the best in herself. She didn't think she'd ever be able to thank him enough for it. "You've really got me reconsidering myself. You've...got me thinking that maybe I'm not worthless afterall. You're the only one that's been able to accomplish that so far."
She paused for a moment, tail still twitching slightly as she considered her words. She took a moment to inhale deeply, satisfied when she still caught Zy's scent. At least they were going in the right direction. Would they find him soon? Matrid wouldn't exactly be unhappy if they didn't. Being so near to Kyren, speaking with him freely...she enjoyed it.
"You're..." She considered for a moment, before turning so that her dark eyes met his. She knew that said eyes would reflect how genuine her next words were, and she wanted him to believe her. "...the only one I trust."

I used up all of my tricks
Kyren was glad to find she seemed to be a fast learner. Likely her dad had helped create that in her, desiring she learn how to behave as a proper sklavin. Now it would be put to better use. She would learn to help him and she would learn how to search for who she really was, the wolf inside of her that had remained hidden in some recess of her mind. He didn’t bother trying to work on any other signals for now, the more you learn in a short period of time the harder it can be to ground in the basics. It was likewise good to see by her expression that she took this seriously, she did want to help him.
He slowed down for half a second when she stumbled, one front paw hanging in the air a bit longer before finishing his stride. A smaller, amused smile was on his face at seeing how surprised she was at his comment on her someday being free. Of course it was easy enough to make her happy with those words, it would quite likely be far harder to keep his promise. However he’d given his word and he would find a way to keep this promise as well. It was rather difficult finding ways to accomplish his desired goals on the type of alpha he would be, how he should act, when he was stuck playing a sklavin.
I hope that you like this, but you probably won't
Watching her out of the side of his good eye he liked what he was seeing. Her head was up more now, she showed a bit of pride in herself that had not been there before. His confidence grew that she indeed could be far more than a sklavin. This certainly solved his problem about being hesitant to care for a sklavin. In Kyren’s mind she was no longer a sklavin.
"You've really got me reconsidering myself. You've...got me thinking that maybe I'm not worthless afterall. You're the only one that's been able to accomplish that so far."
A soft snort at that, his head jerking up then down a bit, “Not too hard Matrid, if I’m the only one who’s tried. As you’ve noticed, it only took few words. You always had it in you, all you needed was to look for it. Another thing to remember, few will pay attention to your words if you do not appear to believe in yourself. Think when you speak, and when you make a decision show confidence in it. You are intelligent.”
When she turned her head to face him, when her words spoke of a deeper decision and not idle words he turned his own head to meet her gaze. She needed to see that he would take her seriously, acknowledge her if something was important to her.
"You're... ...the only one I trust."
you think you're cooler than me
At first she received no response besides a small nod, his eyes again facing ahead as he considered his next words carefully. “Matrid, I trusted growing up in myself, and with that I trusted those in my pack would obey me, of course this does not include my parents or my brother. However, to an extent that is still different than trusting them. I trusted they would do a job because it was their duty. In you, I feel I can trust that you will help me because you care for me, which is a far deeper level of trust. My brother, whom while I learned to be wary of I still trusted to some extent, that our fights would have their limits. Even when the challenge was the loser would become a sklavin, I never expected he would try for such a lasting damage that would hinder me the rest of my life. I feel a sense of honor in a pack, that it will still be governed with rules, and it is only natural for serious challenges, and yet there are boundaries not to be passed. Love or hate he was family. I felt betrayed, whether that is right or wrong.”
Kyren went silent again for a moment, feeling he’d gotten a bit off topic, but he had been leading up to a point, just in a rather circling manner. “I am glad to hear you trust me, it is meaningful to me. However, remember Matrid. I am not the only one you should trust. Trust yourself, if you doubt yourself, find out why and correct the problem. I did not want to get to close to you because you were a sklavin and it seemed improper for an alpha to mix with a sklavin. I have decided what was wrong was having to hide what I felt for common practice. If I am to be greater than other alpha’s then I will not hide who I am or how I feel. Trust in yourself and you will become great.”
Kyren paused then, stopping he sat down and considered ahead. “We are at the edge of the ladies territory. Zy has left her land.” If they went back then Zy would have gained that much more distance. If they chased him down it would mean leaving the ladies land and he was unsure if they had permission to do that. He had been foolish enough not to think of asking. He’d take a moment to consider his decision and then turned his head to regard Matrid. “I am curious. I believe I know what we should do, but I’d like to hear your answer and reasoning for it.” Of course he also just wanted to watch her emotions, to see how she handled all he had thrown at her. Zy had become a useful nuisance.

MATRID
*
“Not too hard Matrid, if I’m the only one who’s tried. As you’ve noticed, it only took few words. You always had it in you, all you needed was to look for it."
That, along with the words that followed, had the she-wolf reflecting on her past, considering. Hadn't she always had that stubborn spark with her father, the one where she would sometimes ignore his warnings or instructions and either result to playing with her siblings - which was specifically not allowed - or sneaking off to see her mother? She hadn't always been a pathetic, submissive thing, and she certainly didn't think she'd been broken. Maybe she really had always had it in her. Maybe she still did.
But ah, of course she did. If she didn't, she wouldn't be wandering along with a brute, speaking of freedom and holding her head just a bit higher than a sklavin usuall did. She found it easier than the usual slinking, cowering posture that was expected from her, a posture she'd always despised but never had the guts to fix. Yes, she quite liked being about to position her body into a more worthy stance.
Will you still act this way around Lady Kasimira? The thought made Matrid falter. If she returned to the Lady acting different, more proud of herself, Kasimira would certainly know something was up. Matrid figured that she would have to act like like her previous self around Kasimira and the others; only Kyren would see her in the state that she was in now.
His words caused her attention to shift back to him, and she listened closely as he spoke of trust with his pack. "Love or hate he was family." This line particularly caught her attention, and she bobbed her head to show that she truly did understand.
" I did not want to get to close to you because you were a sklavin and it seemed improper for an alpha to mix with a sklavin. I have decided what was wrong was having to hide what I felt for common practice. If I am to be greater than other alpha’s then I will not hide who I am or how I feel. Trust in yourself and you will become great.”
She smiled, tail swaying a bit as she spoke. "You're right when you say that I care for you. I'm sure you could tell, but I figured I might as well put it into words." Then, after a small moment to think over her next words, "I think it's safe to say I trust myself. That's one thing I never lost. And one thing I'm proud to still have."
“We are at the edge of the ladies territory. Zy has left her land.”
He sat down, and Matrid stood for a moment, looking out over the border of Irrsin. It was made clear by Zy's scent leading across the edge of the territory that Kyren was correct; he had left. She gave a soft little sigh and lowered herself into a siting position beside him, her shoulder brushing against his lightly. Her warm brown eyes reflected her deep thoughts, her ears pricked and flickering as she silently stared out over the land. Would they go after him? Would that be the correct decision?
When Kyren asked for her opinion on what their course of action should be, she worried for a moment that she might say the wrong thing or make the wrong decision. She almost shuddered at the thought of appearing stupid on front of Kyren. But then she reminded herself, Trust your own judgement. You're not as daft as you tell yourself you are.
"I don't think we should cross the border after him." Her voice was unfaltering, no trace of uncertainty anywhere present. "I imagine Lady Kasimira wouldn't be happy knowing that several of her slaves passed the border. And, she hasn't given us permission. I suppose in this situation, it's better to be safe than sorry." She turned her face towards his, looking him over silently before smiling, nodding her head a little. "If Zy's fled, there's not much we'd be able to do either way. I suppose we did the best we could with the situation."

Kyren sat there, looking out past the border taking a moment to answer a few more of those questions that had bothered him. Looking into some questions he’d thought he found answers for, reassessing them and finding no fault in his judgment. A breeze swept by ruffling the fur and offering the scent of faraway places. So she trusted not only him, but herself as well. That was excellent. She was his now, and thus another responsibility. It’s hard to protect a sklavin when you aren’t the one in charge, easy enough for an alpha to decide to punish the sklavin and it wouldn’t be his place to change that answer. So then what? Go against the lady or stand by and watch Matrid get hurt? Of course it was possible that would never become a problem, but best to consider it now instead of having to suddenly make a rushed decision later.
Perhaps he hadn’t been ready to be an alpha before. Not to say he couldn’t have been had he won the fight, but not as excellent an alpha as he wanted to be. He had wanted power, a pack to claim as his and follow him, to show as a sign of who he was. Now Kyren was catching onto a bit more. Being an alpha meant he would have to protect the pack, to consider what was best for it and not just his selfish self. A smirk appeared on his face when he realized he would indeed be a better alpha than his brother.
His ear swiveled in her direction as she made her choice, that they should return. There was no hesitation in her answer, which was more what he’d been concerned about than the answer himself. Yes, returning did seem the best option in this case. Perhaps if they had gotten a chance to know the lady better they would have a more firm decision, but that didn’t really matter right now. Kyren nodded and tilting his head to the sky he howled, letting all the wolves know where they were. Letting them hear he was as far out as the borders, and depending on where Zy was, letting him know as well. He repeated the howl twice, making sure his voice carried as loud and far as possible. “Well then, I imagine we should head back. Hopefully the lady could hear, and got a good idea of where we were. Let her know we’ve hit the borderline so she does not wonder if we simply decided to claim he’d left the land.”
Turning his head then he rested his chin on top of her shoulders, feeling her soft coat against his muzzle. Offering another sign to show the truth in how his feelings had so quickly grown for her. It was a new feeling for him that he was still growing use to, caring about someone in such a way. It no longer mattered what she was, it was only important of who she was. He…cared about her. The only question now was how much. “If asked, if she seems upset about the choice, then it was mine alone. She doesn’t seem the type to harm two wolves if only one made the decision.” He wasn’t positive, but it was his best guess. Kyren still waited a few more moments before he bothered to raise his head, nudging her ear gently as he did so. With that, he turned around and starte to head back to the den. A small part of his mind wondered if they would see Zy again, though for the most part right now he really didn’t care.

MATRID
*
Matrid couldn't help but wonder where it was Zy had gone, and why. Could he really not stand Kyren so much that it drove him to try to flee? Or was he simply stepping outside of the borders momentarily, deciding that a little time out of Irrsin was worth whatever punishment he might be facing. Matrid couldn't imagine just up and leaving without alerting anyone or without permission. Unless, of course, she was running. But something was telling her not to believe that Zy was gone for good.
“Well then, I imagine we should head back. Hopefully the lady could hear, and got a good idea of where we were. Let her know we’ve hit the borderline so she does not wonder if we simply decided to claim he’d left the land.”
"Very smart idea." She said with a nod. When he rested his chin on her shoulder, she sighed. It was a soft, happy sound, and she leaned her head against his, ears pressed against her head. She'd never cared for another in the same way that she had cared for Kyren. Sure, she'd cared for her mother. Maybe even had some love for her siblings. A tad bit for her father. She'd thought that maybe she'd go her whole life without caring for a canine who wasn't family at one point. But here she was, nuzzled against a brute, completely relaxed.
“If asked, if she seems upset about the choice, then it was mine alone. She doesn’t seem the type to harm two wolves if only one made the decision.”
He nudged her ear before turning and moving off, and she felt another little pang in her stomach. A fluttering maybe, reminding her of butterflies. She stayed in her spot for a few seconds, watching him with a smile on her maw. Then, she stood up and hurried after him until she was close by his right side again.
"I'd feel terrible if you were punished because of me." She said, her voice soft as she nudged his shoulder lightly. Even the thought of Kasimira punishing him over the decision that she made had the she-wolf's stomach clenching. She genuinely hoped that she had made the right decision by telling Kyren that she didn't think it was safe to cross the border. If Kasimira did get angry over the situation, how would Matrid react? "I'm not sure I'd be able to let you take all of the blame."
She took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of both the male beside her and the night around her. Now that they didn't have to focus on following Zy's scent, she was even more relaxed, her eyes scanning the land as they moved. The moon was as bright as ever, and somewhere she could have sworn she heard the soft calls of an owl. She made a small, quiet noise of happiness before turning to look at Kyren, her tail wagging back and forth slowly as she moved along at his side.

How could he have ever doubted this. Trotting along with her, smelling her scent and feeling the pleasure of having someone he could speak to of his past, of his current thoughts or concerns. His mind should have been focused entirely on what would happen when they returned to the den, every possible scenario and what everyone’s perspective might be of the upcoming scenario. What he was thinking on instead was how nice it had been resting his head on top of her, feeling her pleasure in the moment. He had so much wanted to be alpha of his home back, wanted nothing to do with finding his own land. What a foolish notion. None in the pack had offered him this feeling. Kyren’s tail was swaying back and forth happily, ears up still enough in his right mind to listen for trouble, or anyone else in the pack.
After a time his mind accepted the reality of considering details that were important, regardless of how he just wanted to enjoy the time. He was no pup to be careless with his time, enjoying himself instead of focusing on the task at hand. Matrid didn’t want to allow him to protect her from possible punishment but as surely as she didn’t want to see him punished, he felt the same in regards to her. A need to protect one you cared for, it was a more intense feeling than the need to rip out Zy’s throat when he’d been angry at him. If there wasn’t resolution to this and lady Kas was angry it wouldn’t work out that well for them.
“Matrid, you are going to have to do your part in watching out for me so often. Ready to signal me if danger approaches from my blind side. It seems fair to me that I would then protect you from danger that I can see. Don’t take that to mean I wouldn’t protect if you weren’t able to help me. Last I checked it is the male’s job to protect his female.” Ky pause at that statement, considering what he’d just said. “Well…” What could he add on to that statement? He had no right to claim her as his, at least not when he wasn’t ‘suppose’ to be in control of such a decision. Not that it meant much to him what anyone thought, well, except Matrid. Had he just hesitated on finishing a statement? That wasn’t exceptable new territory or not! “You will be my mate Matrid? Not that we could have pups now. No wolf from me will be born a sklavin. I won’t allow anything of my blood into such a llife.” The last part was said with a rock solid determination, but then his voice softened again, “if you did ever want to have pups.”
He had really only gotten to know much about her in the length of time for this journey and he was deciding to make her a mate? Ah well, he imagined there was no need for such a decision to take long. Instincts truly were sometimes the best way to go. He’d been having to dismiss some of his instincts lately, but that did not mean he should always ignore them. This felt right. With all that had gone lately in his life, it was a pleasure to know this was right. He stayed close to her side the entire time his gaze turning occasionally to watch her.

MATRID
*
"Last I checked it is the male’s job to protect his female.”
His female? Matrid's heart did a weird little stuttering beat as the words sank it. There was a very good possibility that he hadn't meant it how it had sounded, of course. But Matrid liked to think that if she could believe he did for just a few moments, it would be worth it.
He was at a loss for words suddenly, and she wondered what it was he was trying to say. Turning her head towards him, she tilted it to one side, ears perked forward attentively. Whatever he was going to say, she could tell it wasn't said lightly. It seemed important, and she was all ears. Anything that he had to say was important to her, of course.
“You will be my mate Matrid? Not that we could have pups now. No wolf from me will be born a sklavin. I won’t allow anything of my blood into such a llife.”
She words shocked her completely. She came to a complete stop, brown eyes wide, body still. Mate? He actually wanted her to be his mate? She'd known he cared for her, but somehow, she hadn't seen this coming. Maybe she really was daft, or maybe she'd been dead set on the idea that she'd be alone forever. Either way, it was a surprise. And not an unpleasant one. Before she could stop herself, a grin was stretching, her tail beginning to wag furiously back and forth. Her body quivered as she tried to hold herself back, but she swiftly gave up and bounded back to his side.
"Kyren...I would absolutely love to be your mate." Her voice was as soft as his now, genuine and sweet, her tail still wagging back and forth quickly. Her eyes met his, reflecting how happy she was, how much she truly cared for him. She could definitely see herself with him, and pups...
"As for pups...I agree with you. I don't want them to be born sklavin's. I don't want to do to them what my father did to me." She shook her head slightly, brows furrowed as she thought. "But one day, when we don't have to worry about them being given the title of sklavin, I do want pups."
Her thoughts raced. What would it be like, in the future? Would she be a good mother to the puppies? Yes. Her thoughts were instant. You'll be a very good mother. And Kyren will be a phenomenal father.
Her thoughts went to Kasimira and the rest of the back, then. Would she and Kyren tell the Alpha, or would they keep it hidden? She supposed that she'd see what he thought about it first. She was slightly worried of what Kasimira would say, but she quickly shook the thoughts off as if they were an annoying bug. She wasn't going to dwell on uncertain or unpleasant thoughts. She was going to allow herself to be happy for once. Really, truly happy.
She stepped forward until she was in front of him before she licked his muzzle, fondness clear in her expression as she nuzzled her face against his ruff, the fur on his neck tickling her nose just slightly. She kept her head there for a minute, inhaling his masculine scent, the smile still firmly planted on her maw.
"This is the happiest I've ever been."
