Red light filtered through a pine sieve, dashing the white forest floor with streaks of pale color. They were on a thinner path through Schreien Forest, so light could still reach the earth below, but it still was not a place to be stuck after dark. Veldis walked along at a slower pace than usual, due to his weary find at the Rock. Her auburn pelt mingled nicely with the passing beams, and the male found himself glancing down at her for more than just concern and courtesy. As he looked across her soot-flecked back and slowly began trailing farther south, he reminded himself of what the girl had just been through and stopped.
He hadn’t said much after they began traveling, preferring to focus more on watching the sky and surrounding trunks for roving threats, but one thing still stuck in his mind: Salali’s face as she stammered “why me?”. Veldis honestly wished he could tell her; could make everything make sense, but he couldn’t. He didn’t know how much she’d lost, but the brute knew all too well how adrift one could be after. Empathetically he touched the top of her head with the crook of his neck while encouraging her forward. “We’re almost there sweetheart, just stick close, alright?”
It had only been maybe a week or two since he’d claimed this land, so there were still some areas he wasn’t all too sure about. He didn’t want to spend the whole night looking around for a lost fem, let alone one lost in the vast maze of the Schreien Forest. Thick trunks with indistinguishable patterns littered this place, making navigation at night a daunting task, which Veldis found out first hand after his second day. As the path wore down to nothing more than a few scent markers overtaken by the undergrowth and snow, it was important to keep a steady heading if they wanted to make it back before nightfall, especially as the sun sank lower and lower over the horizon.
Gradually the suffocating canopy began opening once again, a sign that they were almost upon their destination. Finally, after hours of walking, the den site came into view. “It’s still here, that’s a good sign.” He chuckled, feigning surprise at their arrival. “Welcome to homebase, It’s not much now, but we haven’t had that much of a chance to clean up from the last alpha just letting the place go.” Pausing to evaluate his surroundings he started for one of the carved out chambers, then turned his head back in Salali’s direction. “Oh, right. I’ll introduce you to Daleia tomorrow some time, me an’ her are the only ones here right now. You’re probably exhausted. You can pick out a place to sleep tonight from one of the closer cleaned out dens, but you’re more than welcome to bunk with me for the night.” A roguish grin crossed his maw before he started back to his sleeping site. “I’ll give you a tour and a better Q&A in the mornin’, so just come find me then, I’ll be around. And no runnin’ off on your own, okay?” Slinking into the subterranean darkness he curled into a fluffy ball and quickly fell asleep.

Veldis rose groggily from his sleep, exiting his chamber without paying much attention to if Salali had snuck in to cuddle last night. He had the awareness of a rock during his slumbers, so her waltzing in would have been easy for him to miss. Shaking off the chill from his bones he was greeted to a crisp and bright sunrise, causing his pupils to contract sharply. As his vision gradually adjusted to the change in light levels, he meandered, still half asleep, over to his new favorite sunning rock within sight of the dens and laid down, muttering something about ‘5 more minutes’.
A sudden rustling caught his attention and woke him from his morning catnap. Assuming it was Salali he opened a green eye slightly and yawned before addressing her. “G’mornin’ beautiful. You sleep well?” Running his black claws along the surface of the rock, he stretched and righted himself to a sitting position. “We got a busy day ahead of us, starting with your expectations here in Regnen. Any immediate questions, ask ‘em now, Lali.” Yawning once more, Veldis descended from his warm boulder to stand ground level with the smaller fem, awaiting her response.
