Vernado
Do you recognize the face in the [ m i r r o r ] looking back at you?
[/blockquote]The protection of trees looked like a wall, blocking out all possible entrance from any passers by. The rain fell lightly, hardly felt from the thick canopies above provided reprieve from becoming too drenched from the raindrops. Birds embraced the fall of rain, and squirrels up to no good bounced from one tree limb to the next. The sounds should have been comforting but were rather proving to be distractions. Mocha colored eyes peered into the vast landscape before him, straining to see the eventual end to this infinite space before him. Massive paws caressed the earth gently, skimming over the fallen leaves that were now blackened from their slow decay. Controlled and well thought out movements kept the silent figure moving through a few creepers here and there. He halted for a moment, eyes flicking into the depths of the foliage that surrounded him, offering protection but did little to quell the suspicions rising within him.
With a casual motion, the gray male brought his head back over his broad shoulder, glancing calmly into the darkness that strayed behind him. His muscles tensed as his claws dug into the moist soil, sifting through it as he waited for a sign of danger or a threat. His steady gaze penetrated through light fog coverage, providing him excellent camouflage if any means of an attack were to happen upon him. His right ear twitched with the cool caress of rain that persistently dropped upon the same spot before being absorbed by his thick coat. His eyes moved with haste over the area nearest him, spotting a lone hare frozen with fear. Vernado exhaled forcefully through his nostrils before turning away from the unchartered territory behind him.
Pressing onwards with little satisfaction that he was not being watched, Vernado moved with a sense of regality about him. His strides were long though decisive as if he could not place a paw wrong upon the earth. His head was held high but there was no dominating substance to it. Mystery seethed from him as he remained quiet and controlled as he passed by the thicker woods to gaze out into more land. The land was still moderately dense with the wide variety of trees but now there was another natural occurrence before him. Oddly enough, he found himself at the base of a steep mountain. The mountain rivaled the height of the trees, proving the lands to be rather well off but abnormally unclaimed. Vernado tested the air and found no scent other than that of prey. Curiosity rose thickly within him, but the solemn face he wore let nothing of the emotion pass through. He remained stoic and still, observing the mountainside to only find caves carved into its surface. This seemed to be the deciding factor.
Slowly that unease that grew inside him, the massive male moved away from the mountainside. From the center of a moderately small clearing he raised his head skyward and parted his mouth. With significant ease, a bellowing howl was ripped from his throat. This howl was relatively low, signifying a clear and obvious warning to those within earshot and this warning was chilling. The low note tapered off and reverberated around the vicinity, filling the air with the sound before being taken away by the wind. A faint rumble of thunder echoed after the howl, finalizing the threat and confirming what could happen if those didn’t heed to his blunt and direct message. He pivoted lightly on his paws, his hulking figure to stalk off into the increasing downpour that soon became torrential. Although he was soaked and water droplets beaded off of his muscular frame, Vernado still moved towards the trees in order to spread his scent around his land in which he hopes will become home to himself and others.
