"Why don't we go to the mesa? I'm sure the setting sun would be pretty."
The voice was crisp and tight in the male's ear, a humming annoyance whose only response was a single blink. Visit the mesa? Hmph. Not likely. In this cold, he'd be chilled to the bone before he even reached the border of Dürkell's forests. Besides, he could run into someone on the way there, whereas if he stayed here in the lands, it was almost guaranteed that he wouldn't be bothered by so much as a passing rabbit.
In the weeks that had flown through winter’s unyielding chills, Sicoya’s voice had intensified considerably, her grasp on the aging wolf ever apparent when he was joined by actual, breathing company. He became fidgety and dodged answers like they were accusations. Talking to Echo and Beck was at least somewhat bearable; when Hayashi dared to question him of his whereabouts, he simply ignored her with glares of narrowed eyes or spat back some words he knew would cut. How sweet of him.
When was the last time he’d been in the presence of others, anyways? A few days, maybe a week? Or had it been two? Reiner shook his head, ignoring the dying whispers that told him to think harder. In all honesty, he hardly cared what happened anymore. So what if no one talked to him? He hadn’t anything to say. Mild chit-chat about the weather and the daily commotion at the Auktion Rock could only take him so far, and after that, they would be left to studying the fur on their paws to make the silence less sharp, which in his opinion, was much more enjoyable on his own time with the peace of the woods to reassure him and the soft coo of Sicoya to lull him to sleep.
"I'm okay for today, love. Maybe tomorrow."
Sicoya's eyes burned at Reiner for a moment before she sniffed with displeasure, flicking her tail as she laid beside him. It was all Reiner could do not to swat her with his paw. Arrogant she-wolf.
"So what would you like to do?"
Her voice tumbled like velvet through the air, leaving Reiner quiet for a moment. What could they do? Anymore, the fun pleasures of the past held little influence or drive over him. Rest, sleeping, and naps were the things his days consisted of. Finding something to eat was secondary, although that was mostly due to the fact that he hardly hung around the main pack long enough to stay for a hunt and chasing something down on his own time was too energy-sapping.
What would you like to do? The question repeated again in his mind, this time more edgy than before. Reiner vainly wracked his brain for something, anything, that grazed his interest. After a few moments, nothing. More silence. The time lapsed over him, a wave of lost time, seconds ticking.
And then suddenly, his response came swift and gentle. He blinked a few times before saying the words out loud, his voice trembling softly.
"I want to forget."
Reiner turned over onto his bed of pine needles, clamping his eyes shut to the brightness of the day. How dearly he missed Hayashi and what little affection they had for each other all those months ago. He regretted deeply that had never made a bolder move to show her of his true passion. It was mostly because of her. He didn't have the confidence or attitude to shut Sicoya's sweet seductions down, to try and deal with things alone. For now, she would remain his stable insanity.
As time ticked on, Reiner blocked the forest noises and happenings, willing himself to sleep.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Steadily, slowly, the lands had become active again. Noises could be heard now, in stark comparison with the hushed silence of winter just days ago. The rivers broke free of winter's icy grasp, the birds began to sing in the mornings, the animals began to venture out of their stuffy homes. Life was flowing once more. It was Hayashi's most adored time of the year; Spring. The fresh scents, the greening grass peeping through the quickly melting snow, the sound of the river bubbling nearby, the warm sun on her pelt. It was refreshing, almost freeing to her, liberating her from winters cold cage.
Hayashi had woken early this morning, a usual notion of hers. Most mornings, she took a walk through her lands for a few reasons. One, to check borders. Two, to check for intruders or any happenings. And three, to clear her head and to enjoy the spring weather. Most mornings, she would lay on a large, flat rock overlooking the east part of her lands and it's main body of water. It was quiet, peaceful, and almost everything that moved, flickered, or even fluttered was able to be seen. The rock lay just a quick run east out of the sleeping dens, and was on the way back from her rounds. Sometimes, she'd be up early enough to see the sunrise, to see the first early birds rustle. She loved it. However, it would be more enjoyable if she had someone to accompany her. To share the beauty with.
That was a touchy subject. Right now, Hayashi was beyond confused on who her real friends were, who cared about her. Especially one wolf. That one, unfathomably curious wolf, Reiner. Although he was the one painful connection to her ruined past, there was something about it that made them click. At least, it had to her. His company was comfortable, something she was used to, unlike this new land. Maybe it was just her head playing games with her, she didn't know or really wanted to. She liked this wolf, more than liked this wolf. He had begun the healing of the hole in her chest, the hole that had been tearing her apart for years. He numbed the pain, made her smile even with his painfully stubborn ways. Stopped the nightmares. Calmed the fears. She had wrapped her mind around it all and it had dug into her, insanely deep. More deep then she knew even herself, Xercese deep. But now, that connection was slowly shattering, almost completely broken apart by now. What was once companionship had turned to bitterness, and that was all she saw in the glares he shot her occasionally. Hayashi knew that the love wasn't mutual, or so she thought. Whenever she thought of there ever being a future with the brute, those five words drove the knife even deeper into her heart.
"No. My mate is dead."
The coldness of which he had said it all the while ago still struck her, still shocked her. The literal feeling of her still being his mate, forever being his mate, was heavily laced into that sentence. It had seemed to Hayashi as a sign that Reiner was not interested, nor ever would be. They were both broken, she knew. They both had the ghosts of their pasts haunting them, encircling them. Reiner especially. He had always acted off key, like he was hiding something. That was usual. But sometimes, Hayashi would see him talking to someone who was actually not there. Looking at someone who was not there. It was odd, but she knew not to question him about it. Which wasn't a problem, since they hardly exchanged words as it was.
However, today proved to be different. Padding her way up to the sleeping dens, Hayashi heard Reiner grumble inside. The leaves rustled, the air stirred. For a moment, she was afraid to move forward. They had never encountered each other closely in the morning because he was a late sleeper and she wasn't. They stayed out of each other's way, as much as it killed her to do so. There was a feeling inside her growing, a thought rising to her head. It had been brewing for a while now, and she had knowingly fought against it, scared of it's outcome. Desperately she wanted to talk to him, to ask him to fix things, reconsider. She knew he didn't want her, but it wouldn't hurt to try, right? She was lonely, hurt, bitter, and it only increased as they became more distant. She was conflicted with what to do. She didn't want to bother Reiner, but another part of her did. She whimpered to herself, slowly stepping to the mouth of the den, sapphire eyes searching the dim floor. She saw his russet pelt turned away from her, and she sighed. Maybe he was back to sleep, maybe she was imagining things. Battling with her thoughts, Hayashi sat where she had stopped, wrapping her tail around her delicate ivory paws. Blinking slightly in the rising sun, she gazed onward, shifting from Reiner's still figure to the forest around her. She said not a word.

Reiner, finally beginning to give in to sleep, faintly heard a crunch of pawsteps from outside the den. There was a bunch of shuffling and then silence. More paw steps and then back to quiet. Huffing loudly, he rolled over on his pine needle bed, curling up away from the den's entrance and hoping, vainfully, to block out the noise. Within seconds, however, there was more rustling outside and the sound of a wolf's soft whimper. He'd know that noise anywhere. "Maybe she came to see someone else." Sicoya, even without appearing to him, was quick on the draw. Her sultry voice lingered in his ears as he tensed, realizing that the creamy she-wolf had settled down right outside the den's entrance. It was now or never.
Seconds passed into minutes as he laid there, stationary, heart thudding. Surely she could hear it, even from beyond the den's mouth. It was loud and crushing, throbbing against his chest and unwavering. Sicoya purred angelically, her cheek rubbing against his. She called him without words, the darkness of the den deep with longing and meaning. He could practically see her lithe frame working it's way around his ribs, into himself. And then, after a slow blink, Reiner swiftly sat up and licked his chest a few times before padding quickly--possibly a little too quickly--out of the den and into the sunlight.
Reiner was immediately blinded by the sun's rays and forced himself to blink before settling his gaze on the Durkell Alpha. The first thing he noticed was how utterly tired she looked, and for a moment the male felt guilty for making her wait all this time. He nervously opened his mouth to say something before snapping it closed again, his grey eyes sad. What could he say? What was there to say? The space between them was far and wide and he'd blatantly allowed it to grow ever more over the winter moons. I'm sorry, his eyes seemed to say, as they desperately searched her face for some indication of how to begin. His voice crackling from disuse, Reiner finally spoke.
"Can you ever forgive me?"
Not entirely sure he wanted to know the truth, Reiner waited for the she-wolf's verdict.

Time passed, seemingly crawled, as she waited outside the den that housed the rusty wolf. Her ears would flick with each occasional rustle, but no following appearance was made. Hayashi was becoming more irritated as the seconds waltzed by, and soon the heat was rising from her fur at the embarrassment. What was she doing here? Passively waiting for him to wake up, and for what? More arguments? Certainly she had better things to do than to brood over Reiner, who seemed more distant now than ever; an enemy, no doubt. She shook her beige head softly at the bitter thoughts, casting her eyes to the pale blue sky above in near desperation. She began to rise from her seated position when she heard much louder movement from inside the cave. Hesitating, she watched, struggling to keep her eyes cool, as Reiner appeared at the mouth of the den. Oh my. Here it comes. Mentally, she embraced herself for a sharp, witty comment that he would surely throw at her, but her face went blank at the unfamiliar, apologetic eyes that searched her own. His address, gristled with sleep, sent an odd feeling twisting through her body.
"Can you ever forgive me?"
She blinked, frozen in her just-about-to-leave position. The wolf that was standing before her felt completely different, and she wasn't sure how to take it all in. Over the past few moons, Reiner had been bitter and blunt, always walking around the lands like he was surrounded by a black cloud. Now it seemed that maybe the fog was lifting.
"Uh -", she croaked, unsure of how to reply after the assault of emotions. What was there to say? What was there to forgive? Sure, Reiner had pushed her away, but was that not her fault in the first place? She didn't know. She felt so unsure of everything when she was around him, and it made her feel uneasy. She didn't like to be caught off guard, but, she had to admit, it was almost as exhilarating as it was frightening. Maybe that was why she was still here.
Hayashi blinked with a sigh, regaining herself as she turned back to face him. Her face softened as she observed the tender eagerness in his own. Could they hold this grudge forever?
"Reiner, I honestly do not know how to address your question. We are out of sorts right now. I think, before any forgiveness can be given on any side, that an explanation might need to come first."
She sat down slowly, desperately trying to maintain her composure. She couldn't crack in front of him, not now. "What happened?"

"Uh,"
Between the two of them, Reiner hesitated at her indecision. His eyes searched hers, waiting, watching.
"Reiner, I honestly do not know how to address your question. We are out of sorts right now. I think, before any forgiveness can be given on any side, that an explanation might need to come first."
The beige female moved with care, seeming to gather herself. Her eyes, when they did blink back up to his, were concerned and searching.
"What happened?"
Reiner was at a loss for words and he remained motionless. The question struck Reiner as strangely odd, having lived the ordeal for the past few months. What had happened? Nothing that hadn't happened before. Nothing he hadn't expected. Nothing that he could have prevented. Sicoya, as usual, was being the devilish she-wolf she was. And he unyielding battled with himself about whether to give in or ignore her wordless taunts and sly remarks. But what to tell Hayashi? Should he tell her the truth, as it was in it's entirety? She'd think him mad--if she already didn't. She had to know something was tormenting him. He'd whispered her name enough during late night slumbering or when he was sleepless and without the cognitive function to filter his words. Besides, she had already been upset with him enough when he'd lied all those moons ago about his name to gain entrance into Hrellia. Today he had to start fresh. He needed to be honest.
"And what if she leaves you, darling? What do you propose then?" With a slur of the tongue, she was there, before him and next to Hayashi, her white tail brushing the Durkell alpha's as she settled in. Her fur glimmered oddly, sparkled untold fantasies of the dead and Reiner blinked a few times, forcing her image away. Not now. Please. But still, she persisted. Sicoya smiled haughtily, baring her teeth in a mock of anger. "How dare you force me away. You already slaughtered me once. Don't do that to my memory as well." At this, Reiner's eyes widened, unsure of how to calm himself enough to deal with the raging vixen. And then, with the blink of an eye, her demeanor reversed direction. She slunk forward with those blue eyes on his and Reiner stiffened at her touch, the brush of her cheek, the gentle caressing lick she placed on his forehead. He'd missed that feeling...
Hayashi, don't forget Hayashi. Momentarily stunned as Sicoya slithered into the den, Reiner switched his gaze to Hayashi and stared deep into her blue eyes. Sicoya was calling him like a whisper of wind and still he watched his alpha, focusing on the color there, the stillness, the steadiness of her eyes. With a deep, releasing sigh, he started to talk.
"I'm sorry I haven't told you the story sooner. I was afraid Hrellia would not welcome me into their ranks and I needed a pack to call home. I was so lonely in those days. In my birthpack, I was driven out by my father early on, but I was soon taken in by another pack who had a different way of dealing with things. We hunted other packs and took their lands, we got what we wanted and dealt with others as our Alphas saw fit. I eventually fought for a female we found during the summer months and she became my mate. Her name was Sicoya and although she loved me, she did not love or honor the pack. She planned a coup behind my back and the Alpha told me to kill her for her disloyalty. And I did."
The words were heavy, the male casting his stormy gaze upward to watch the sun for a moment before continuing on.
"Her last words have been haunting me ever since. I believe the Alpha saw our partnership as a threat and framed her to secure his position."
He blinked up, surveying her for a reaction. Sicoya howled anger to the skies in the background and the noise she made racked his brain, shaking his ribs. Clamping his eyes shut to ignore her, he managed to mutter the last bits as the she-wolf's rage engulfed him.
"I loved her Hayashi, and I regret what I did. I always will, I'm sure of it. But she haunts everything I do. I don't know how to move on."
Reiner, his eyes focusing again on Hayashi's blue eyes, tried vainly to hold his ground against the shaking snarls that Sicoya circled him with.
