Why The Sky Is So High
Back in the age of starlight and moonlight, the sky was the palace of Eperna and Iudex, and was much closer to the land than it does today. A wolf would be able to touch the sky if he climbed to the top of the Hagen Mesa, and he could feel the clouds if he ventured into the steepest of the Aldine mountains.
During this time, there had been a drought for many moons, and the earth was dry and cracking. The deer and moose were hungry because there were no grasses and berries to eat from the land, and the wolves and bears were hungry because the deer and moose were in such low numbers that they had banded together to give themselves and their calves a better chance against their hunters. Iudex was unwilling to help the earth because he was saddened by how the wolves had broken into packs and were hostile to each other at all times. Eperna begged with her mate for many days and nights to let rain nourish the land of her sons and daughters, and fianlly Iudex relented on one condition: that the rain would be unleashed only if the wolves worked together.
The wolves were starving after many months of thin deer and few rabbits. Many had died and the packs were small in size and number. The Alphas met at what is today the Dominor Pakt, and they decided that all the packs would work together in order to keep the memory and legacy of the wolf alive. Some wolves refused to work together, and they were taken to the Aldine mountains and forced to live the life of a loner.
They set up their hunting patrol as one, with the Alphas leading in waves. For days at a time they would chase the herd around, and once one patrol of wolves would tire, the next would take up their path. In their chase, the deer and moose would stir and tear up the ground, creating large dust clouds that rose to choke Iudex in the sky. He complained to Eperna who remarked on the wolf's cooperation. Much to Eperna's dismay, Iudex complained that they had cheated and that another test would soon be held. But the constant dust thrown up by the stampeding deer and moose posed a problem for Iudex; after so much dust his eyes began to water, which rained down onto the earth and ended the drought. In his anger, Iudex moved the palace of the sky further away from Ravensbruck and swore to never live that close again.
