The Guidebook
General—commander of the entire pack. His word is law. He makes all big decisions, determines punishments, and leads the army into battle. Lieutenant General—the mate of the General, with almost equal power. If the General is unable to lead the army, she is officially in charge (provided they have no heir over the age of one year), though the Colonel takes over most of the General’s duties. Major—the heir, next in line to become general. He or she is raised along with the other pups, but trained exclusively by the General. When he or she reaches one year of age, they officially become the Major and are in charge of the army if the General is unable to lead it.
Colonel—adviser to the General. In charge of carrying out disciplinary actions dictated by the General, as well as in charge of overseeing the training of Recruits. Should anything happen to the General before an heir can take his place, the Colonel takes over the General’s duties, including the training of the heir, if needed. Lieutenant Colonel—the Colonel’s mate. They take over the duties of the Colonel if the Colonel is unable to carry them out and assist the Colonel in training recruits. They are also the unofficial healer, expected to help wolves tend to their battle wounds.
Captains—the elders of the pack. They are honored with a high rank and the ability to order around those of lower ranks. They may act as a jury for punishment of serious crimes and a cabinet of advisers for important decisions that affect the pack as a whole. While they are not required to do so, they often train new members of the army. Sergeants—the main bulk of the pack. These are the males and females who the General has deemed loyal to the army and worthy of being in it. Their main duties are hunting and defending the borders. Corporals—all pups over a year old and new members begin here; some never leave. This is a time for wolves to hone their battle skills and gain experience. If they want, they can continue to train with a more experienced wolf, usually a Captain. Most become Sergeants by the time they turn two years old, and those that don’t are usually the weak or the lazy. Privates—the slaves. They are the expendable soldiers of the pack. It is possible for a Private to be promoted, but very unlikely. Encouraged to breed to build up the pack, slaves are allowed to mate with whomever they wish, but they must accept that the General may take their pups to Auktion Rock if they don’t measure up to the army’s standards.
Recruits—all wolves under one year of age are considered Recruits. As soon as they are weaned from their mother, they begin training where they learn the basics of fighting and hunting. After they become Corporals training is no longer mandatory, but they may request further instruction.
Prisoners of War—wolves captured in battle or being held hostage. They don’t usually stay long, heading either to Auktion Rock or back to their packs, but if they do they become Privates. Dishonorably Discharged—those who betrayed the army or committed serious crimes. They have been exiled and will be killed if they return to the territory.
