How easily his feet carried him back to the place that brought on a montage of memories.
Carefully, the ivory brute picked his way down the path that lead to the pool of crystal water gathered below. Not far behind and above him was the waterfall, roaring openly to the world as it crashed down, splashing upwards where it met the surface of the water. His paws thudded lightly against the dirt beneath them, his pace not quite slow, but not rushed, either. He was in no hurry to get to the bottom of the path. Perhaps he should have been worried about hurrying back to Irrsin, but he knew that the pack was in capable paws. Between his stunning mate, Kasimira, and the talkative yet bold Beta, Kyren, he was sure that Irrsin would last a few hours without him prowling around. A few months ago, he would have been loathe to leave his pups, but they had grown so very much now. They could handle themselves.
The fact was, things had been so quiet in Irrsin lately. Tortuga had found that there was very little to do, aside from patrol and participate in the occasional meeting. Each pack member tended to keep to themselves, and that was fine. But one morning, Tortuga had awoken and found that he was aching to see something more than the lush meadows. Not that he grew tired of Irrsin. On the contrary, he quite enjoyed it. It was his home, and the only place he found that he belonged. Yet a brief change of scenery was in order, and Tortuga had known just the perfect place. That was how he had come to find himself trotting down the worn path, the sun beaming down, warming his white fur.
Finally, Tortuga reached the bottom of the path, which curved around and flattened out. He paused, glancing at the gorgeous scenery. From the moss covered rocks that peaked out from behind the flowing falls, to the vivid green grass that dotted the muddy shore of the pool, it was gorgeous. The sun's rays reflected off of the water, and Tortuga found himself relaxing as he strolled forward, glancing around. Aside from the occasional bird that swooped overhead, he was alone.
As he waded into the pool, which proved to be quite chilly, he was consumed by images of he and Kasimira, passionately rolling in the grass at his back. His lips pulled upwards into a half-smile as he stopped, the water reaching up to mid-foreleg. He dipped his head down, his chin lightly resting on the surface of the clear pool as he stared down at his own reflection. Cerulean eyes met their matches as he stared himself down, his heart beating softly in his great chest. Really, he thought. Who was he?
Well, to start, he was one of the Alphas of Irrsin, ruling beside his wonderful Queen, Kasimira. He had a large pack, the largest in the area, he believed, and a trio of regal pups who were growing into fine wolves. But those things...those were what he was, not who, and his mind tried to wrap itself around the thought of his being. Every time he thought he had a clear opinion on the matter, however, it slipped away from his grasp, and slippery as an eel. For some time, Tortuga had wondered what made him...well, himself. He was so very satisfied with life, but could he ever truly be fully fulfilled without knowing himself, inside and out?
