MENELAUS
--Until my bones give out--
The cracking of twigs beneath his paws was the only hint of approach that one would receive as Menelaus picked his way through the dense trees, a bloodied hare dangling from between clenched jaws. Menelaus' ears flickered back against his skull, but there was no other reaction from the brute as he pressed on. His amber eyes were glued to the path ahead, flickering animatedly as his sides heaved, his body still recovering from his recent hunt. Oh, how Menelaus loved to hunt. The rush that he experienced, the chills and satisfaction that his body was subjected to when he had successfully caught his prey...it was intoxicating, almost.
Proudly he lifted his head, strutting forward through the underbrush. His eyes continued to roam, searching for something. Finally, his eyes zeroed in on a clearing and he veered to the side, trotting towards it. Once he had cleared the trees, he slowed his trot to a slow walk, moving to the center of the clearing and sitting back on his haunches. He let the rabbit dangle from his jaws for a few moments longer, and then he released it, watching as it thumped to the ground.
Slowly he lowered himself into a laying position, taking the rabbit between his paws and beginning to pick at it as his mind wandered. It had been a few days now since he had been here in this area, and he was considering staying. Where else did he have to go? And surely he was far enough away from home by now. Shaking his head, he allowed his mind to drift back to the strange place he had passed by; Auktion Rock. There, he had seen slaves being treated like dirt, and he had reflected on the stories his mother had told him about Dominors. He himself did not exactly disapprove of the slave business, but once more it made him think of his sister, and he knew that he had been right when he had left home.
Snorting softly, Menelaus left the half-devoured rabbit and stood, his appetite suddenly gone as he stretched. Shaking his head, he moved a few steps away from the carcass, glancing around. It had to be nearing midday now, the sun above having no affect due to the snow that clung desperately to the ground. Menelaus himself did not mind the snow, although he much preferred the spring and fall. Shaking his head, he began to push his way through the trees again, exploring, wondering where it was that his journey would take him. Would he wind up discovering a new area, or would he wander about in this forest forever? It was almost eerie, how quiet it was, but Menelaus had experienced much creepier things. Sighing softly to himself, he picked up his pace until he was weaving between the trees at a trot, lost in his thoughts.

Amulet traveled through the underbrush, her tail sweeping the ground as her eyes and ears flickered and darted about in search of anything that she could eat. A hare darted out from the under the bush and scampered away. Instantly, Amulet gave chase, her bounds bringing her closer and closer to the animal, but then of course her memories had to interfere.
"Come on Am, you're such a slow runner, the elk won't wait all day!" Jay had teased as he danced, on long swift legs, out of her way when she nipped at him. His laugh had brightened her mood as the rain poured, making the sky look glum. He shook himself and sprang out a head, telling her to catch him if she could.
Amulet had charged after him, her dusty pelt brushing the grasses of the meadow. She could see Jay's black form streaking through the grass a head of her and was determined to catch him and the cow elk they were chasing. She dove into it, pushing as hard as she could, her breath coming out in puffs. She managed to catch up with him, but he was already bent over the carcass of the elk and looked up with a sly smile when she came up beside him and flopped down, obviously exhausted.
Jay had laughed and Amulet had glared defensively at him. She had always know that Jay was a better hunter and runner then she was. He was built for long travels running at the same rhythmic speed, while she was more for the short fast runs, like hunting rabbit. Her hunting happened to be quite accurate unless her memories came into the picture, and that was more then seventy percent of the time so usually Amulet went hungry. But not today. No she would not go another day without food.
Amulet pulled herself from her thoughts and raced down a hill, skidding and sliding on the snow. She lost her footing and fell straight into another wolf who just happened to be weaving though the trees. Amulet rolled a few paces, then sprang up and ran over to the other wolf. "I am so terribly sorry! Are you alright?"

MENELAUS
--Until my bones give out--
Blindsighted. That was exactly how Menelaus felt as something slammed into him, causing him to stumble, barely able to catch his footing before he went tumbling face-first into a snow pile. Snarling, his fur instantly bristling, he whirled, amber eyes searching fiercely for the offender. And there, standing a few feet away from him, was a dusty colored wolf, looking quite as startled as Menelaus felt.
"I am so terribly sorry! Are you alright?"
The moment her voice hit his ears, very soft and very female, his lips slid down to cover his teeth and his growling ceased. He strutted over to her, holding his head proudly as he looked her over, his eyes flashing.
"Alright? I'm perfectly fine. And what about you? You crashed into me quite hard," he replied, his gruff voice dripping with concern. Had it been a male who had smashed into Menelaus, he likely would have torn into them in a fit of rage. But when it came to females, Menelaus was the complete opposite. In fact, this stranger was the first fae that Menelaus had encountered in this strange new place. He flashed her a quick smile, attempting to be as charming as possible as he looked her over, examining her. She was a bit larger than he was, but that was a minor detail.
"I'm Menelaus," he said, realizing that he had been standing idle for a moment, simply staring at her. He backed away from her a few steps, sitting back on his haunches, his ears flickering as he glanced around. "I apologize for the snarling display. You simply surprised me." He tipped his head down just slightly, keeping his amber eyes on her as he watched her. Perhaps she would find his behavior odd; some females simply did not react well to brutes. Or maybe, if Menelaus was lucky enough, she would take it all in stride.

Amulet dipped her head, "I am quite alright, thank you." She flashed him a small shy smile when she noticed he was staring. He seemed to realize it and back up a bit and sit back on his haunches. He told her that his name was Menelaus. She smiled briefly, "I'm Amulet, it is a pleasure to meet you, Menelaus."
He was one of the only others she had come across so far and she inclined her head to him when he apologized for growling at her. "It's fine, no need to apologize, I was quite surprised myself and probably would have reacted in the same manner if someone ran into me. Again I am deeply sorry for crashing into you, I simply lost my footing on the snow. I never have been sure-footed," she offered a soft chuckle for her clumsiness.
For a moment there was only silence and then Amulet asked, wanting to strike a conversation, "What are you doing around here?" She thought of Jay, he had had amber eyes too and almost fell into a one of the many memories raging inside her head, but shook her dusty head to forget about that for just a moment. She wasn't aware that it looked as though something was wrong with her, only that she was trying to cope with the heavy sorrow that was still heavy on her slim shoulders. She also wasn't aware that one could see a few of her ribs, having always happening to slip into a memory of hunting with Jay when she tried to eat.

MENELAUS
--Until my bones give out--
Amulet. So that was her name. Menelaus flashed another smile, dipping his head down just slightly as he spoke. "Very nice to meet you, Amulet," he replied, his tail swaying back and forth slowly as he peered up at her.
"It's fine, no need to apologize, I was quite surprised myself and probably would have reacted in the same manner if someone ran into me. Again I am deeply sorry for crashing into you, I simply lost my footing on the snow. I never have been sure-footed,"
He chuckled as well, the sound as soft as he could manage to make it. He offered no reply to this, however, as his mind worked away. She was thin, that much was obvious, and his thoughts drifted briefly back to the half-eaten rabbit carcass that he had left laying in the melting snow. He felt wasteful suddenly, and he shifted his weight, wondering why it was that she had allowed herself to grow so small. Could she not hunt for herself? Or was there some other problem? Either way, it was hardly Menelaus' business, and he truly was not one to pry..
"What are you doing around here?"
His head snapped up and he shrugged, a careless lift of his shoulders before allowing them to slump down. "Wandering around aimlessly, which is what I always seem to be doing these days. I haven't been in this area very long, so I'm still trying to acquaint myself with the land. It's gotten me lost more often than not," he admitted, laughing and shaking snow from his fur. He sat back then, his mind mulling over things once again. That was Menelaus for you. The constant thinker.
"I apologize for my silence," he began suddenly as he looked at her once again, "but I've noticed that you're a bit...thin. Just a while back, I left half a rabbit that I hunted. If we hurry now, we can get to it before the crows do. And while we're on the way, you can tell me about what you're doing around here. Sound like a plan?"
His gaze once again swept her body, a concerned look etched onto his features. Although he was usually not one for hospitality, he simply couldn't ignore a damsel in distress, could he?

i'm stuck in the past....
Amulet smiled at his reply and looked at the snow for a while, awaiting his reply to her later question. When he answered, she lifted her head a bit and smiled at his laugh. When he commented that she was a little thin she looked at herself and was astounded that he was indeed right. She turned her gaze back to him and her ears, that had sunk in embarrassment, pricked up when she heard the mention of food. "Thank you Menelaus, that would be wonderful."
She paused for a moment and listened to the breeze in the wind and was surprised when she didn't feel her thoughts drifting to Jay. But as soon as she thought his name a memory swung into her head. He had been teasing her ever since they'd lost a cow elk and Amulet was almost irritated with her friend. She had snapped, "Jay, just shut up for once, would you!?"
He had been astounded, just as she at the cruel words. His black neck fur bristled and a growl came from his throat. She knew that he had had a mate before her and she had betrayed him. That was why he was growling, because he was afraid to let it happen again. "What do you mean? Do you want me to leave? Do you want me to just stand and get killed by a bullet or an elk? Huh, do you, because I am rather lost right now so please do enlighten me, Amulet." A sneer had entered his voice and his black tail was lashing back and forth.
"NO!" Amulet had cried, "That is not what I meant at all! I'm sorry Jay it's just that I hate it sometimes when you tease me about hunting, I am doing my best I am just not the fastest wolf on this miserable Earth."
Jay had avoided her gaze then, afraid to gaze into her morning sun eyes as they glistened with tears. "I'm sorry Amulet, but I think we need to stop seeing each other for a few days, we both need time to calm down." Then his black form had turned and slipped away into the grasses.
Amulet's attention popped back into reality and she said, "Lead the way, Menelaus." She tried to smile but found she was unable. So she didn't try again knowing that it would do her no good. She sighed and hung her head, her gaze on the ground thinking about that day that had been almost a week before Jay had died for her. Her eyes glistened with a coming tide of tears.

MENELAUS
--Until my bones give out--
"Lead the way, Menelaus."
Menelaus smiled, pleased that she had willingly agreed to letting him show her the remains of the rabbit. She had reacted almost as if she hadn't known she was so thin, and Menelaus felt a little pang of pity for her. He was glad that he had stumbled across her. With a reassuring smile, he turned and started back the way he had came, pushing between trees and leaping over brambles while constantly glancing back to make sure that Amulet was following him.
Onwards he pressed, searching hard for the clearing he had stumbled upon earlier. All the while, his mind wandered. He had stumbled upon females before, but none that seemed to match Amulet. A few times he had noticed an odd look in her eye while he was speaking to her, and he wandered what it was about, but decided it might be too soon to ask.
Finally, Menelaus stumbled upon the clearing once more. His lips pulled away from his teeth as he spotted the rabbit, immediately noticing the crow that was bent, picking at the body. Menelaus sprang forward with a snarl and the crow took flight, a flurry of flapping, croaking feathers. Snorting slightly, Menelaus turned back to face Amulet, his tail now swaying slightly as he gestured to the rabbit with his muzzle. "Here you are. If you're still hungry when you finish this, we can hunt, if you'd like."
A smile graced his muzzle as he stepped away from the body, sitting back on his haunches and curling his tail around his paws. His amber eyes wandered, his ears twitching to make sure that they were alone. The last thing he wanted was some other wolf sneaking up on them and perhaps startling poor Amulet. With this thought, Menelaus turned his eyes back to her, tilting his head just slightly to the side.
"When you've finished eating, perhaps you'd like to tell me a little about yourself? You don't have to, of course, but what can I say? I'm a curious individual," he said, a small laugh sliding from between his teeth.

i'm stuck in the past....
Amulet looked at him and smiled. She walked to his side and gently licked his ear. "Thank you, Menelaus. And a hunt would be marvelous, but I am afraid I may not be much of a help," she frowned as she bit into the rabbit and licked the blood from her chin. "As you've pointed out, I'm rather thin but I will do what I can to help you bring down a deer or whatever it is you'd like to hunt."
She finished the rabbit and licked the red stain off of her mouth. She smiled. She had just realized that this was one of the first days, since Jay's death, that she had smiled. It felt good to smile and be happy. Perhaps there was a chance that she could forget that pain just for a day at least. If that was all she would be given, then so be it as long as she got one day of happiness.
Her dusty pelt had almost looked dull days before, but it was almost as though it was brightening because she was with Menelaus, someone who made her happy. "As for myself?" She gave a thin half smile. "I was born a free-roamer, as was the one I loved, whom was named Jay, a black male. Jay and I were the best of friends in our pup-hood years and we made plans for the future, even though our parents said we would never end up together. But they were wrong." Amulet raised her gaze to him, her eyes glistening with tears. "When we were grown, and our parents had long since either passed or gone off, we found each other again and began a life. I had two pups, that were the son and daughter of Jay. I never told them that Thunder and Amber had been brought into this world because of him and I. I gave them to two old family friends, Ivan and his brother Enar. I was going to tell him on that horrific day." She swallowed and avoided Menelaus's gaze. "A hunter came after us because we had been walking past his farm. We weren't going to eat anything, we were just taking a short cut to the den we shared. But he came after us. His instrument that makes that ear splitting bang was locked on me, but Jay pushed me out of the way. I ran. After Jay fell to the ground after pushing me out of the way, I ran. I am a coward. I should have stayed and fought for him. I know he's dead but I can't go a day without being forced into a memory of him and it hurts. That's why I cannot eat or hunt. Because I am reminded of the memories I've had with Jay." She began to cry, tears sliding down her dusty gold and grey muzzle.

MENELAUS
--Until my bones give out--
As Amulet began to tell her story, Menelaus was silent, his ears tipped forward, drinking in every detail. He painted a clear picture of her tale in his mind, seeing each event clearing, frowning just slightly to himself when she described the death of her mate. While Menelaus was not the type of wolf to feel pity, he wasn't completely cold-hearted, especially towards lovely, soft faes. Clucking his tongue softly, he moved towards her slowly as if to show her that he meant her no harm. He touched his muzzle to hers once he was close enough. It was a brief gesture of comfort, and it was very unusual for Menelaus' character. Rarely did he offer affection.
"You are very strong, and quite brave, for dealing with something like that. Do not blame yourself for fleeing. Had you returned, you likely would have suffered the same fate." He spoke quickly, his voice brisk but his tone gentler than usual. While his tone offered little comfort, his words were meant to. "I can not say that I understand what you were feeling, as I've never had a mate to lose. But I can imagine how difficult it must be for you."
Menelaus had barely even considered a mate before. He had flirted with many females, sure. How could he resist, when he was so very..male, and when they were always so seductive? But to take one of them as his mate? Menelaus had never thought to. It made you vulnerable, he thought. You always faced the risk of losing them, just as Amulet had lost hers. And he never wanted to have to imagine a pain like that. His heart was encased in iron, or so he liked to think.
He took a step away from her, tilting his head as he considered her for a brief moment. "I can't say that my story is similar to yours. I grew up in a small pack, and I was quite close to my father. I had one sister, and she was not as brash as I was. Often she felt left out, and I believe she began to consider leaving so that she would not have to deal with my father always fawning over me. This scared my mother, because my sister was weaker, and had she left, she likely would have been forcibly taken as a slave. So my mother asked me to leave in her place, to give my sister a chance to blossom. And, well...here I am." He cracked a slight smile after he had finished his story, but it was not his usual arrogant, boyish grin. He still worried about his family, as weak as that made him feel.

i'm stuck in the past....
Amulet felt Menelaus's muzzle touch her's and she gave a small attempt at a smile, but didn't really succeed. She swallowed and listened as he told her that she was brave and strong and that she shouldn't blame herself for running that she would have suffered the same fate. She offered another weak smile, "Sometimes I think it would have been better if I had died and Jay had lived." She sighed and her breath lingered in the air.
She listened to his story and nodded slightly, "I'm glad you're story is a better and somewhat more happy one then mine. I am glad that someone like you did not have to go through the same thing as me." Amulet sighed again.
She didn't, just as he didn't, know how he felt as her parents' other children had died at birth and they had always said Amulet was a weak one, that it was strange for the runt to survive. Well she hadn't been a runt, but that's what they called her, her parents that is. She wondered what it was like to have parents like Menelaus had and the more she thought about it, the more she wished she could see it.
She wished that someone had cared for her, in her family, as much as Jay did. Her father always seemed to busy with her mother and hunting and her mother slept all the time and always tried for more children as though Amulet wasn't good enough. She didn't want to tell Menelaus about her parents because it just made her want to howl at the sky and ask them what she could have done to make them notice her.
A snowflake landed lightly on her nose and she sneezed, suddenly shivering against the cold, considering how thin she was. She looked around out of the corner of her dull morning sun eyes for some sort of shelter or den.

MENELAUS
--Until my bones give out--
Menelaus said nothing for a long moment, despite her words. His mind was caught up in his past, visions dancing in front of his eyes as his ears flattened against his skull. Sometimes, he longed for his family back. He missed running alongside his father, hot on the trail of a doe. He missed speaking softly to his mother about trivial things, flirting with the faes of the pack, and he even missed his sister. But he knew that what he had done was for the best, and he also knew that crying and missing them would get him nowhere. He was a warrior, after all.
A shiver from Amulet made him glance to the side sharply, realizing that she must be very cold. Immediately, his mind raced. He could not take her back to Groavche; somehow, he wondered how well she would fair in the face of Kronos. In fact, it likely would not be long until Menelaus had to return himself. But for now, he had to find somewhere a bit warmer for her. Shaking snow from his pelt, he frowned. "I'm quite glad that spring is approaching fast. I tired of the snow," he admitted as he looked around. "Perhaps we can find somewhere that will serve as shelter. Would you happen to know of a place?"
Even if she did not, Menelaus would at least help her find somewhere before he took off into the night. He was not one to leave a damsel in distress, so to speak. He wanted to play the white knight, the one who rode in with gleaming armor, his wit and charm something admirable. Call him arrogant, but that was indeed how he saw himself as he glanced around, waiting patiently for her response. If she did not know, perhaps they could find a cave, or some sort of close cluster of trees. Anything to keep the harsh bite of ending winter out, as winter was loathe to leave. Menelaus, personally, was glad that it was. While the snow didn't truly bother him, it was not his favorite season, and he could fair well with a little spring.

i'm stuck in the past....
"I'm afraid I don't" she replied softly when he asked her if she knew a place where they could take shelter. She sighed and looked about, "But I'm game to help you find one." A tremble was like an earth quake to her thin body and she hung her head, her tail waving faintly as she tried to get her blood moving again, as it seemed to have frozen.
She looked up at Menelaus and sighed, her breath fogging in the air. She shivered again and said quietly, "I do wish the spring would come soon. This weather will be the death of me." She'd been trying to strike a lame joke, but she knew that it could actually be true, due to the way she fairing. She tried to smile, but a shudder overtook her and she winced at the cold wind that ruffled her dusty fur.
"A warm den sounds nice right now," she said lightly and her gaze swept around, but she couldn't see anything that looked like a shelter good enough for two wolves. She looked at Menelaus, "Do you happen to know any place?"
She wanted to sit down as she waited for his answer but she knew that if she did she would most likely freeze to death. But then again she was already moving swiftly toward that. She wished Jay were there. He would press his black body into hers and his heat would transfer to her, a sacrifice he willing gave for her. But then if Jay were here then she never would be nearly falling to the ground when a shudder or tremble broke through her thin body. She sighed again and turned her morning sun gaze to Menelaus once more.

MENELAUS
--Until my bones give out--
When Amulet responded that she could not think of a warm place, and then asked if he could, Menelaus frowned and shook his head. She looked as if she were freezing, however, and the last thing Menelaus wanted was for Amulet to die on his watch. He knew enough about the cold, and knew that she had to keep moving. "Come on," he said, nudging her side gently before taking off through the woods. He did not move too quickly, not wanting to overwhelm her, but he knew that he had to work fast. His eyes scanned the area for any signs of...well, anything. Anything warm enough keep her alive.
Finally, Menelaus's eyes focused on a close cluster of trees that formed a sort of half-circle. He moved inside of them, gesturing for Amulet to follow. This is as good as it's going to get, he thought, which frustrated him greatly. She needed a den. She needed warmth, and there was nothing that he could do about it...or was there?
Slowly he looked up at her, sitting back on his haunches. "I know that we have not known each other long, but you know by now that I am harmless. If you would like, you can nuzzle against me for warmth." He felt almost embarrassed offering this, but Menelaus swallowed his pride as he looked at her. "You seem very cold, and I can't have you dying. The idea may be a bit on the uncomfortable side, but we have to do what we have to do."
He didn't want to push her into anything, so he stopped there, shifting nervously. His ears flickered back and forth as he glanced at her, awaiting her response. If she turned him down, perhaps he would keep searching for a den or a cave. But he did not know if he had enough time.

i'm stuck in the past....
Amulet got to her feet when Menelaus nudged her side and watched him for a moment before racing after him, her long legs making it easy to catch up to him. She thought, This is what Jay and I used to do, race side by side through the snow, sending sprays of white dust out behind us.
She stopped behind him as he looked at the half circle of trees. When he gestured for her she followed him inside and swept her gaze around it. When he spoke she looked up at him. She tilted her head at him and then avoided his gaze. She stepped closer to him, still a little embarrassed that they had just met and now she was going to lying next to him for the warmth. It almost made her feel uncomfortable. Almost.
But it made her feel needed, like she had when Jay was alive. It felt like someone cared. She laid down next to him and closed the distance, leaning against him somewhat awkwardly. She felt a small smile caress her face as she felt the warmth spread through her. "Thank you Menelaus.." She looked at him and smiled, her morning sun eyes glowing with joy.
She dared to think that this was one of the first times she'd been happy since Jay's death, and she loved the feeling of happiness. She loved the warmth that was flowing into her body. Amulet sighed and her breath loomed in front of her, but she didn't care. The cold couldn't touch her, only brush gently frosty hands across her spine. But that couldn't harm her now.
...and i can't get out |
