REINER With only a slim crescent of moonlight that spilled onto the ground, the night was thick, soundless, heated. It was nearly summer in the valley, and even on nights like these the air was warm and stale, stagnant and grasping. There was no loud noise, no caterwauling challenges to be met. No sklavins vying for attention and retribution, no dominors screeching their fury in the blazing, suffocating heat. There was nothing, save the careful plodding of a tall, maned wolf.
The normally red coat was a dulled, half-blushing maroon in twilight's soft whisper, and it slunk among the low stubble and brush without so much as a crackle underneath the well-placed paws. The ears on the wolf swiveled with a slight interest, although there was nothing to arouse the male's concern at this time of night. The creatures of the land were in hiding, the nocturnal ones careful to disguise their whereabouts. Everything was settled in balance, waiting possibly for the chance of a tipped scale, a disturbance to break the barrier. Still nothing came, the wolf remaining silent as he moved, the grey eyes only searching with no reprimanding howl to back up the ferocity that could blaze there.
His intentions were shaded as he moved, the shadows reflecting his mind, growing and shrinking as he weaved in and between the grasses that led up to the Mesa's tallest point. The pack's security and usual amiable nature was of no use or importance to him as of recent. He'd provided Hayashi with his energy, his time. She required little of him in terms of romance and as of late he'd taken to slipping out at night for a quick run, an escape. He needed to gather his thoughts, collect them for a moment or two before she reached back to scramble them. This way, or so it seemed, the control over himself and his rag-tag emotions wasn't too far stretched.
What a joke. The relationship between the two wolves had reached an intersection, a crossing of paths. They'd raced to Vienna only to find themselves teetering on the cliff's edge, the safety of ropes and guides lost. Frankly speaking, Reiner wasn't exactly sure what he wanted of the beige female to even begin with. She was beautiful, no doubt. Her flare for conversation and female ways was impeccable. The dominor side was highly intriguing. And yet.. that white and black frame with the blotched lines and blue, sparkling eyes still haunted him. Would he never be rid of such vile things as her?
Sicoya. The name repeated like a fire branded in his mind, leaving the male recoiling and searching for the matches. Reiner snarled his distaste for the she-wolf with quite a display, his ears drawn back as he paused to consider the events slowly. She was dead. Had been for quite some time. Still, she floated vividly through his dreams, his nightmares, his fantasies. Nothing was real without her snide remarks, her fluttering, captivating eyes. Reality lost the color without her vibrancy, her magic. For Reiner, she had transcended fantasy, living only in the visions that kept her breathing so deceptively it seemed only ignorant to call it false. Whatever he convinced himself in the blindness of daylight was a pairing of lies. Sicoya's influence had never left him, a constant reminder of both his aggressive, unyielding desire and ferociously unpredictable irrationality.
Reiner slowly, lowered his body to the grasses, taking the time to consider his surroundings properly. The mesa was breathtakingly beautiful, illuminated only by slivers of glistening moonlight, accented above by the twinkling, dancing stars. She adored these nights, regardless of the heat and uncomfortable humidity. They had been lovers and rebels, romancing each other under the stars at night and playing along with the roles assigned them during the day. To the others they had been neither introduced or seen together, too careful and wary to risk their positions, their status. Too cautious to risk his position.
She had been a slave, a prisoner. He had been the Beta, the respected. He had it all; if he'd so much as wanted her as his offical mate he could have appealed to the Alpha for such a thing. Something had held him back. Maybe it was the fierceness of her gaze or the way she openly challenged him at times. He'd been pious to the culture and customs of his pack, closed to the idea of taking an outsider for a mate. What an idiot he'd been...
Sighing as the memories washed over him, Reiner lifted his grey eyes to the sky. Vainly he searched for some inkling of her, some form of her that wasn't chilling his nerves to the bone. Some part of her that was more immortal than his own thoughts and lost reminiscences. What had they become over the years? Surely their experiences, their combined self-conscious didn't end in nothing more than a lost romance. The maned wolf shook his head in frustration. He didn't know the answer any better than he had yesterday or the day before.
Maybe he never would.

Pelkuri Pelkuri moved in a long, swift gait. The blackened sky was almost suffocating, she needed somewhere to get away to think and maybe to rest. She took long slow cautious steps, still unsure of her exact location or in which direction she was headed. If she saw a stranger she could run, take off into the woods and disappear into a mess of twigs and dead leaves. She came to a small clearing of the trees her wide brown eye illuminated by the soft moon that hung overhead.
A light breeze passed through her amber coat, she tried to pick up a distinct scent but nothing smelled familiar, there were so many things she hadn’t seen and places she hadn’t been, though it’s impossible to see them all. She took one final glance at the moon, her moon. Hoping that there would be a slim chance that a member of her family looked too and thought about her, about that life tucked away in the mountains. She felt like a shadow lost behind floods of strange faces. Her eyes darted back and forth until they landed on a huge rock formation.
Being curious and young there was nothing stopping her, she moved toward the base of the rock, trying to find the easiest route up, there it was! With long legs, it wasn’t as difficult to climb as she’d anticipated, the higher she went the cooler the air got, the louder the wind blew into her narrow ears. Her eyes jumped to ever movement and her ears turned toward every sound, there was no danger in being cautious, however, no fun can be found in being overly guarded. “Why’d I do this, I don’t like heights” she mumbled under her, now, heavy breath. Though she wanted to go back down she admitted to herself that it would’ve been a terrible waste of time.
One more swift gust of wind, but this one was different, odd. There was another wolf here, as she had suspected she was not alone. She followed the scent until the slight form of a living creature came into view. She let her thoughts debate for a while, was it safe? Would she be able to get away fast enough if some sort of problem were to arise? One again, curiosity got the best of the small and usually timid wolf.
She walked up behind him, timid with her footing as not to be too loud, he looked deep in thought. A process that might be rude to interrupt, but that thought never crossed her mind, she continued moving until she was a few lengths away from him. “Never seen the ground from this high up!” Pelkuri finished with a short lived laugh. “It’s an incredible view.” She proceeded to look around, taking note of each star, and then she redirected her attention to the other wolf.

REINER “Never seen the ground from this high up! It’s an incredible view.”
Startled, Reiner scrambled hastily to his feet, the grey eyes flashing as he began to quickly analyze the situation. It was a female by scent, his eyes confirming the thought as he spotted her. Relatively pretty. For a moment the maned wolf forgot his impulsive anxiety at the sudden commotion, letting his eyes wander over her tawny fur. Her neck and stomach was a pale white in contrast to the brown hue and Reiner's inwardly praised his good luck. Relatively pretty on first thought, much more on second glance.
Still! Who in their right mind just waltzed up behind a wolf like that? Hadn't her mother taught her manners? Reiner eyed her carefully before responding right away, his shoulder fur spiked from the quick turn of events. What was he supposed to say? Reprimand her for the intrusion? She'd only meant to be friendly, that much was clear. Her stance wasn't rude in the slightest way, her facial expressions much less.
Maybe this was a chance to move on from Sicoya. Flirt a little, act alive. Have some fun. When was the last time he'd genuinely enjoyed himself? Pssh, as if he knew. Reiner paused to consider himself, the memories floating back over him. Hrellia. Life in the Hrellia pack had at least provided him a regular home, somewhere he could attempt to fit in. The deep, thick woods had felt like a piece of himself, with the pine trees providing delicate shades that allowed him to breathe, to run, to celebrate his freedom.
He missed those feelings and trappings dearly, for how easy it had been to run with the pack and fight for his friends when needed. Paws tingling, Reiner looked from the night sky to the female, a certain curiosity hidden inside. Flirting had never hurt anyone.
"It's better in the morning light, right after the sun has come up."
Slowly, Reiner stepped forward towards the female, dipping his head in mutual respect. This wasn't like him, this liveliness, this character. As the night grew older, he embraced it, a certain warmth spreading over him.
"And what is the name of such a fair dame as yourself?"
Reiner let his masculine charm take effect. He wasn't nearly as attractive as other more built males, but he had a certain height and polite quietness about him. He still wasn't sure if there were those gods watching that the native wolves talked about, but he silently prayed something would come of his boldness tonight.
Iudex willing.

Pelkuri Pelkuri didn’t mean to startle the other wolf, but even she had to admit it was a stupid thing to catch an unknown wolf off guard, there’s no telling how they’ll react, it could be they’d lash out and attack her. she wasn’t even sure what she was thinking she should’ve announced her presence but she couldn’t resist. Her brothers always snuck up behind her. She guessed that it was just the right thing to do.
She sat down slowly, scanning the area then returning her eyes to the other presence on the large rock. He was a reddish color, and well built. She was thankful he didn’t have a harsh temper and lash out; he could very easily have taken her. She laughed it off and shook her head free of any negative thoughts. She looked out at the sky, flocks of birds scattered, their long, melodic cries coating the area with a sense of freedom. The wolf spoke about the land at sunrise, in her opinion one of the most beautiful parts of the day. The beginning of the day “I’ll bet, I guess I’ll wait to see it” She paused and looked over “I’ve nothing better to do.” She lowered to a sitting position, and wrapped her red tail around her feet.
He asked her name, “It’s Pelkuri but if it’s too much of a mouthful you can just call me Kuri, it’s what most end up doing anyway” Her brown eyes flicked around, and the short breeze ruffled her fur. She was wondering if there were others close by, and also wanted to know what this wolf was doing up here, however, she didn’t need answers. Besides, she ran up the rock merely on impulse maybe he did the same. Though, before she busted in it seemed as though he was deep in a thought.
“About earlier, I didn’t mean to scare you” she teased, hoping it would be received well; she wasn’t out to offend anyone, or make enemies. She smiled and flicked the black tip of her thick tail. Taking in a heavy breath of the thick air, and taking another look around, she couldn’t get enough of the view.
